Pickup is F150 Ecoboost with 3.55 gears, 7200 GVW, 1350 payload, 15500 GVCW, 9600 tow weight, P series tires @ 44lbs. Load is B21, scraper, tiller, bucket, tools etc. Total tow weight 8300.

so i understand... you saying the trailer scaled 9600 lbs with cargo? which based on empty trailer weight was a cargo weight of 8300lbs?

9600-8300 = 1300

1300 + 960 (10% tongue weight) = 2260 <--- trailer "curb" weight?

1350 payload in the truck was ~960 in TW plus ~400lbs of driver/fuel etc?

It sounds like you scaled the load. pull truck on only read 5900 (pull all the way on the scale) read 15500, pull truck off scale read 9600?

What is tow rating for that truck? (i cant keep up with all the options and years and how the rateings seem to inflate each year)

were did you get your trailer? and can i ask how much you paid?

No, his max tow rating is 9,600# for his 3.55 geared Eco Boost. His max GCWR is 15,500#. His trucks published max payload is 1,350# and the trucks GVWR is 7,200#.

So his truck weighs 5,850#

Chris has it exactly right on the specs, thanks!

On the trailer, I got it new from Jimmy's Trailer Service in Warrenton, Virginia. Very nice folks. $4k. I looked at dozens of new and used trailers before buying that one. Used trailers in this part of the country are about 2/3 the cost of new and a real roll of the dice as far as condition of brakes, axles, frame, hubs, tires, wiring. There are a lot of different new trailers. The PJ seemed to be reasonable in quality and price.

I probably would have hauled it similar to what you did but I would have used ratchet straps for the end loader, I might not have done anything for the backhoe, and I would have eye balled the tongue weight.

Federal regs (FMCSA) require a separate tie down for items like a backhoe.

To the OP: thanks for the report and it's good to hear that the board was helpful.

I do not know if it's FMCSA reg or just here in Texas but you also need to have your out rigger arms on the backhoe chained where they can not come down.
Several people I know have gotten popped for that down here!!!

I want to say thank you very much for the great information on trailering small tractors. I recently towed my Kubota B21 with implements from Virginia to California. Not my line of work, I had no idea about type/size/design of trailer or how to tie down the tractor and implements. Listening to local folks in Virginia I had a range of differing opinions. I studied your forums for several weeks to learn more. In the end I made the trip with absolutely no issues. The setup and load was scrutinized by passing highway patrol officers in 8 states. Here is what I used. Pickup is F150 Ecoboost with 3.55 gears, 7200 GVW, 1350 payload, 15500 GVCW, 9600 tow weight, P series tires @ 44lbs. Trailer is PJ 14k 20' equipment trailer with LRE tires @ 80lbs. Load is B21, scraper, tiller, bucket, tools etc. Total tow weight 8300. Used 4 of Lowes G70 5/16 chains, cutting them in half with abrasive saw to get 8 10ft pieces. Two chains crossing under the front, two chains on the rear, one on the hoe bucket, one on the loader bucket. Plus one on each implement. Used 6200 lb ratchet binders. I used a Sherline tongue weight scale and adjusted the load repeatedly to make sure I had 10%-12% tongue weight. Used an Equalizer 12k WD hitch. Traveling at speed limits up to a max of 70 mph had no issues with bounce or sway. Checked the chains about every 50-100 miles, they loosened up repeatedly during the first two days but after that were tight all the way. Again, big thanks to TBN for being an excellent source of expertise.

You did a great job for a 'first time hauler'. I'm glad TBN was able to help you.

I know your suppose to have the back hoe strapped down, but lets be real here, how could the backhoe fall off. I suppose in theory it could, but very unlikely. Kind of the same thing for the endloader, it could fall off, but very unlikely. But I'm sure your correct, the rules say you should.

On chaining the outriggers, I did that. Didnt know it was a requirement though. Did it because the arms drop down by themselves overnight so knew they needed to be chained for a week trip.

I suspect the theory is that, if the hydraulics fail, the backhoe could swing side to side and either hit something, or unbalance the load, causing a tip over. Think of a sharp curve and the hoe suddenly swinging to the outside.

I do have to agree, I don't understand the loader going anywhere. Besides, that's how I chain the front of the tractor down, through the crosstube on the loader. That's the way the dealer delivered my tractor. Probably to meet FMCSA regs, that's not enough, unless the front of the tractor is chained separately.
