Here I have to compete with the local township.. They have people who call them claiming they are to old to plow their drive and the township goes and plows them out..I called the Commissioner one morning and asked him if he was in the snow removal business and I just need to know what the scoop is..He told me what they do. So I do not do those old peoples drives anymore and tell them to call him..He can have the liability till he gets burned on it.. I do the post office and my own drive and my business..

We have the same thing but they don't necessarily have to be old. Free removal!

Well Having found this area and spent some time reading.. I've just read this entire thread.. and I don't care if it's summer right now.

It sounds like there are a lot of people out there who're prepared to rip you off.... and even more people *here* who're just brilliantly kind and "good neighbours" :)

I like to think that I fall into the "Good Neighbour" category.... I have 3 houses close-ish to mine. We have a 200meter driveway that I plowed last year (will have a snowblower this year).

Accross the road we have 2 houses that I clear the front of - because I hope they'd do the same for me. One insists that I take beer for my trouble, the other has so far loaned me his scaffolding for a YEAR... if anything I owe him.

Our nearest neighbour (and now good friends) is a family our age. They've just bought an ATV with a snowblade.... and have a yard and stables to sort out... so he can mostly look after himself.

However... They also have my phone number. On Christmas day I was out rescuing him from a snowdrift... He'd got so stuck that he couldn't open the doors to get out. It took me an hour to get down my own driveway, and 10 minutes to get to them and dig them out. They were 15 meters from home

I also spent an hour clearing the road so that others who live further up it could get to their homes for Christmas... It's the way things are done here. If you have the machinery you help out if you can - it all comes back to you somehow.

For the last 10 years I have taken care of sidewalks with a walk behind snowblower for a (now) 85 year old widow. State snowplows love to double the depth to be cleared. Never asked for anything, just being neighborly. When I heard that she was selling the house to move into assisted living, I asked if we could purchase a corner of her property (maybe 1000 sq. ft.) to square off the lines....I was told NO WAY, she needed every square foot to get top dollar. BTW, she passed away 6 months later and the house is still on the market. Hope the future new owners have a snowblower.

The new owners may not mind selling a slice of the lot to a nice neighbor.

Since her office is at home, wouldn't the cost of snow removal be a deductible business expense? If so, she could have charged the co-pay, then paid it back for snow removal. Both parties would have been ahead, then.
BOB

Exactly right, plus the chiro would still get the better deal because she gets to write off the expense in addition to bartering for the services (co-pay only, she does have to charge the insurance company).

Let me just say this,.... the neighbor I took care of last winter will never see me in his driveway with a shovel or a 3 point snowblower again. Ever.

I played by his rules and laws, took meticulous care of his driveway and walk-ways with my blower and shovel...it was looking real sharp. But, his complaints were baseless and I got tee'd off and told him to find someone else to take care of it for him.

My revenge was watching his driveway go to crap due to a plow on the front of a pick/up AND I counted no less than 4 different trucks in his yard. Word is out in the neighborhood that he is Cranky and he goes through help left and right.

Kind of sad really. He is in his late 80's.:confused2:
