Interesting. I've never heard of people trying to capture live hogs. Is that common?

Yes very commom at least around here in Fla . They attempt to trap them in cages and or run dogs on them , then hog tie-em or slit their throats ETC because citrus land owners fear of a stray bullet lodged in an orange an ending up going to consumer . Which would lead to lost of citrus contracts . Lots of orange groves around here where hogs frequent don't allow rifle /black powder etc hunting even if your tight with land owners.

Here in Texas you have to get rid of the Hogs anyway you can, they can do a lot of damage in a very short time.(overnight while you sleep). My neighbor continues to have a problem with them. He traps them and then calls a guy who comes and picks them up and moves them to a place(far away).

roadhunter, I understand that is how you feel, and you are entitled to your opinion.

Having read both newspaper reports, my opinion includes:
Stupid...yes, for me, but not for two guys who have that much experience catching hogs with dogs, as a team.
made up...being a hunter myself, the details of the account are very believeable, as are the photos and weigh tape
wrestling a 790 lb hog and tying it up is a unique feat, anywhere it might be done, pasture or pen
while rare, a hog in the wild CAN get that large. The genetics are there from escaped domestic hogs and Russian boar stock
For it to be staged, the two guys, the County Commissioner, hog owner, and Justice of the Peace, newspapers and Texas Parks and Wildlife would all have to be in on it.
On the day of the catch, the weather WAS warm and overalls sans shirt are used in rural Texas, sold at TSC and other stores.
I would like to see photos of a 800 lb bull, not halter broken, which you roped, in the pasture, single handedly and hog tied it without other equipment. The rope is a more immobilizing assistive device than a dog.
Agreed, it was not a "wild animal," not having been born in the wild, but that doesn't mean it wasn't feral or dangerous...hogs do have teeth and try to use them when cornered.

Sounds like you were impressed. You shouldn't be,

Animals that big don't go unnoticed, especially in a place where you can's get far from people. If you want to believe it was all just a random luck hunt then so be it. My guess is one of the neighbors had been feeding this hog to get that large and they guys located it and thought it would make a really good story if they embellished it with a "wrestling story" since the hog was not afraid of people.

If an animal that size wanted to get away from a person it could with ease. But that want' the case here. Try posting a bogus story like that in Wyoming and you will get laughed at. Post it in Texas and people thing are some sort of great pig wrestler legend when you wear your overalls with no shirt. Only in Texas.

BTW my family has a farm in Midway so I'm am familiar with Texans and how they operate.

We have a terrible hog problem in our area. Very rural, a lot of soybean and corn fields for them to munch on. Biggest hog I have killed was 327 pounds, boar, with a bad attitude. The biggest one on record in my area was just over 400lbs. These animals are very nomadic, it is extremely rare for one in the wild, with as much moving as they do, to eclipse 500lbs. However, pen one up, feed it regular, the sky is the limit on weight. I have a lot of experience in dealing with these hogs and I agree on one point- this pig was domesticated and used to humans.

Why not just kill them rather than relocate?

In some cases hogs are bought live and let loose in fenced in areas. This is big business reason being then they bring in so called hunters to these area's for "high success" rate hunting $$$ . These are commonly referred to as "canned hunts". Seen em advertise the same with zebra's/bison's/exotic deer/ etc , think you get the picture . You'll know they are caged hunts espiecially when the animals advertised are not native to that country/region/ and or state .
The $ list does not end there . Then comes the taxerdermist fee , hotels , etc. I guess its human nature then come bragging'lieing BS rites .
Something like shooting fish in a barrel. Me personally I can't stand to hear anything about canned hunts or so called bragging from them.
When game is hunted legally and not in a confined area (no matter how large) it's commonly refererred to as "free range" .

Wow! That may fill up a freezer on the cheap, but I think I'll pass. I'm not ashamed to admit that fighting a 700lb hog for my dinner is beyond me.

That is a neat pen mover contraption you built!

Domestic or wild, hogs are strong. No way I'd try to handle or move anything over about 150# though I have moved a couple in the 250-400# range a couple times... they were exceptionally docile though.

Wild and 175+, and that would be a shoot issue, not wrestle.. I've seen tusks that flatten and wear and are like razor blades

Why not?

Kill means lots a hogs to clean at one time. And some may be sub prime.

Catch them, relocate, pen up, and slaughter as needed when prime. In most cases, people will let you catch wild hogs damaging their property for free, or even pay a head fee.

Thanks. I just assumed since they were so distructive people would want to kill them as quickly as possible to save the land.
I never thought about making money on the things. I have also heard the larger, older hogs do not taste very good --- you only want the younger ones to eat.

We don't have any, yet, in my area.

But, never to early to learn.
