Of course there could be a hole through the PTO shaft as some have said with debris stuck in it (small stone etc). That may give you the play your seeing but keeping it stuck on.

Ah well I know were all looking forward to the end of the mystery and none more than you!

I would try wiggling it back and forth while trying to torque it off with the puller. It could be that the PTO has worn a groove in the adapter. The adapter is probably soft compared to the PTO shaft.
I'd split the adapter with a grinding wheel and get a new adapter, it might cost $50 or so but, it will save you $$$$ in aspirin.

At this point in time, I'd consider getting hold of the dealer you bought the tractor from first, then the back hoe manufacturer.
Explain the problem to them and get their advice. Also, tell them what you've done already and what you may be planning (that is, the gear puller or the allthread trick).
In one of the posts, you mentioned this was the first time you dropped the BH off. That adapter may have been stuck on long before you bought your tractor.

Since you've tried a prybar, I don't think a puller is going to help either. Personally, I think you'll end up cutting the adapter off with a grinder.
Since the adapter does wiggle, it's unlikely the cause is rust. A burr may well be the issue (with precision machined parts, it doesn't take much of a burr either), but since your prybar actually started bending during your attempts, that would have to be one heck of a burr...of course, I'm assuming you didn't "cock" the adapter when prying and you did pry from differing areas of the adapter.

It's possible this adapter was buggered up before you bought the machine. You just didn't notice it until recently.

When you contact the backhoe manufacturer, you may want to ask about replacements adapters, since it is possible you'll end up destroying it to remove it.

I'm a newbie here on the forums (still trying to think up a good name before I register), and a newbie with tractors in general, but......

Have you tried using a long feeler guage through the inside of the adapter and out between the adapter and the spline shaft? If you can get one through, you may be able to determine where exactly the hang-up is. Perhaps then you could use a diamond-wire cutting blade on a coping saw or something of that nature to cut through whatever is holding the adapter on the PTO.

Take a punch the same as the "outside" diameter of the "hole" you can see through and make sure it passes through the shaft... is it possible you have a "large" roll pin in that hole and you could be looking through the "center" of the roll pin itself... (and the roll pin shifted up/down inside the hole?)

Also take some emery cloth or steel wool and go over the outside of that adaptor... you have to be missing a "concealed" or blended in roll pin... it will be placed near the outside edge (implement side) of the PTO tractor spline...

When you can flex a crowbar and not move it... it is not some metal burr holding it... have one of your kids or somebody with "eagle eyes" look closely... at all sides/angles... not just from the top...

I bet something got into the groove around the pto shaft. Why don't you try turning the shaft so the the hole that the pin was in is at the bottom and run flexible wire around the groove to see if you can push whatever it is around to the bottom so you can remove it. This is about the only logical explanation that I can see for your problem.

On our old farm tractor we could push the pto shaft further on the shaft than the retaining pin slot and would have to pull it back to let the pin catch. you might see if the adapter will push further on the shaft. A light tap with a hammer might move it forward and let what ever is binding it come loose.

Well I have yet to figure out how to get the adapter Off. Since I have no other PTO powered attachments at this present time,it is not imperative at he moment to get it off.
So rather than destroy it by cutting it off, I will just be patient and figure out what is holding it on. As for right now, I have reinstalled the backhoe so I can move it away from the lawn and to someplace where it won't kill the grass while sitting idle.
