Or, as in my recent purchase of what used to be thickly cushioned merino wool socks made by a company named Kodiak from Sportsmans Guide, they are advertised as the same, have the same item number and price, but are no longer made with the same quailty of materials, i.e., thin and noncushioning merino-like wool.

I hear ya. I've been wearing Dutch Harbor Gear heavy sweatshirts for ten years. Last month my Wife ordered a replacement (I keep three on hand). It is a lot lighter, not nearly as warm, and is now made in China. Of course the price did NOT get lighter. I went online to their website and emailed the "contact us" address with my complaint. My email was returned as undeliverable.....

I've run in to the same thing so much that Ive decided when I find some item I really like that I'm just going ahead and stock up on it and keep the one's I'm not immediately using stored new in the box. Most of the time you just can't depend on consistency from one year to the next in stuff like clothes.
