Mornin Erik,
Very nice !!! Looks like quarter sawn white oak with a dark stain and beautiful ray pattern !

Heres a pic of the kitchen table I built last winter, nice ray pattern on the legs also !

Nice table Scotty! I guess ray pattern has something to do with the grain, Right? Woodworkers do have a way about them. All I seem to find time to do is make a few chairs to sit in....

Mornin Guys,
George, Bird and Wayne thanks for the compliment on the kitchen table ! White oak is one of my favorites, and the legs on that table were rough cut on my buddies sawmill. What I call "ray pattern" are those light marks on the legs. With the right combination of stain they can be highlighted nicely.

BTW, Wayne nice Adirondack chairs with the right beverage they can be quite comfy !

Also if anyone is interested, that project was documented under Cliff Johns thread http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/related-topics/92306-all-day-making-little-boards.html?highlight=boards+big

Bird,
"Ray flake" can be found in lots of wood species (look up lacewood some time) one of the easy ways to make sure it shows through a finish is to wipe the wood down with linseed oil a couple days before putting on your finish coat. This is an easy way to make most figure "pop", no matter what the species. After the oil has a couple days to cure, you can coat with polyurethane and still have the look.

Eric - very nice plaque (I guess that's what you'd call it) and cool light switches.

scott_vt - I really like that table. I love the character and personality that different types of wood exhibit.

Erik_in_Hoyt - thanks for the tips on getting the most out of your wood. I'll have to try that some time.

Eric, that's just something else new I've learned on Tractorbynet. Very pretty wood anyway.

If you want an idea of what wood will look like finished, give it a quick wipe with mineral oil - you get the finish look, can see what hidden figure there is, and it evaporates fast so it doesn't mess up any finish you might be thinking about putting on later. Water (damp sponge - not soaking!) will do the same thing - but then you have to sand again after it dries because water makes some of the grain swell.
Damp sponge is also a good way to pick your lumber before sanding - it gives you an idea of what's there before you put in the effort of planing and sanding.

Erik, very nice looking home. My Grandmaws house had push button light switchs. Thought they were long gone.

Scotty, again your woodworking skills are beautiful. Great looking table. PS: what kind of wood is the wainscotting? The whole dining area looks cosy.
