You could be right. That is the story as I have heard it over the years, but I might be mistaking the exact engine type. He did definitely put a car engine in the tractor, and I'm pretty sure it was 6 cyl., but I might be wrong as to the type.

In any event, that sort of thing was so common with my grandfather that my Dad's side of the family doesn't even consider it particularly strange. Here's a couple more:

1 engine between a car and truck. Put the engine in whatever vehicle you needed at the time. If you leave out most of the mounting bolts and don't bother hooking up "needless" stuff, it apparently only takes 15 or 20 minutes to swap an engine ....

Build a fire with newspaper in the middle of the living room floor and use it to light a kerosene lantern (by holding the lantern in the flames) just to watch people's reaction .....

Roll a piece of bread into a ball with your greasy hands after doing mechanic work until it is as black as dirt and pop it into your mouth just to freak out the "fancy" company that had come for dinner ....

Bird,
Once the suspension went out on one side they were all slant engines... or maybe they ran lean! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

R Squared,
I've pulled some large trees on our property with our old IH2500B. But the stumps didn't have the root system that you show. That's pretty cool! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

( I think my grandfather has that beat.

When he was young, my dad came home to the farm after school one day, got off the bus, and the house was gone. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Looked across the field and there was my Grandpa with the little Ferguson (similar to a Ford 8N), front wheels in the air, pulling the house across the field. It was only a little 3 room shack on skids, but still a big pull for a 20-something horsepower tractor.

Why did he do this? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Just because he just thought it might be nice to have the house "over there" .....

This is the same grandfather that replaced the engine in that very Ferguson with a Studebaker slant 6 (had to lengthen the tractor) and drove it to town once in a while.

At about 40mph .... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Brad, I will concede failure, ONLY IF, you tell me that somebody's mother-in-law was also in that house!!!

Bob, I'm starting to see a reason why your wife doesn't take you with her when she goes to visit her mother.

I don't know, but probably not. I guess you don't have to concede failure.

If I drive my tractor west the days get shorter for the whole world, if I drive east they get longer.
I try to drive the same amount in all directions to keep the earth on an even keel.

Hot diggity, that is heck of a tractor you have there. I appreciate you keeping everything even. What happens if you go down a hill, do the satellites for Directv get closer ? but then even out when you come back up.

Man, that is a lot of reponsibilty. Think I would trade it in on something a little smaller with less of a stress load. Of course then you would always have to worry if the guy who bought it later had the same high scruples.

I don't envy you.

Thanks again, Mike
