zzvyb6----You seem to think "outside the box." With your creative nature I bet you had a heck of a time in elementary and high school. You are probably one of those types who would do just fine on a deserted island.;)

Great thread. I put up hay as a kid with my dad. I just buy all my hay now, and Dad works spud harvest for a neighboor in the fall in trade for hay.

Since the subject of weed free hay has come up in this discussion, I thought I'd share the little bit that I've learned about it. You can increase your price with the weed free certification, but not much. There's not demand for large amounts of it since most guys will just buy enough certified hay for their one or two trips into restricted areas. That may be 5 or 6 bales.

You're hay doesn't have to be absolutely weed free, it just has to be free of weeds that are listed as noxious.

Here's a link to the forest service site about it: USDA Forest Service Intermountain Region - Natural Resources - Noxious Weeds - Closure Orders

Usually it's a state department of agriculture that does the certification. They check your field and the lanes, ditches, windbreaks, etc. around the field. The fee really isn't too much...around here it's about $3 per acre.

And ITS ORGANIC ! WOOF! I have never plowed, disced, planted or fertilized the hay here. [/QUOTE]

Be careful about how loud you call your hay "Organic". Nowadays the government has gotten into the organic realm, and you have to jump through all of their hoops and pay their fees to use the O-word. I've managed organic programs in the past and there's a mountain of paperwork that you have to go through to back up your claims.

Here's the location of my island:

42°35'12.33"N
83°44'47.74"W

Used Google Earth to locate and plan the hay cutting. Acreage estimates based on perimeter path worked out pretty good.

Cut the last of the hay today. I'll get some pix of the Kuhn rake in action so you see what little power and weight it takes to do that step.

Wish I could post some video clips. That would remove all fear...

Here's the last piece of the picture puzzle: Raking.

Jake like to tear up the windrows.

The YouTube video is very convincing that this is not hard to do with a CUT. Anybody tell what specific JD it is? The tractor is only running about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle if my guess is correct. You can tell from the exhaust note and the feeder fork cycle rate.

The "other" guy manually stacking bales has the nightmare job!
