The \"D\" word.

We're beginning to hear the "D" word being used around the DC area. "D" meaning drought.

We haven't had any decent rain in months. I haven't hear the rain defecit for a whille. My wife has heard that a few wells have dried up in our area. Outside burning is banned.

How is it in other parts of the country? Whoop, I should say Globally since we have some regular vistors from other countries.

Re: The \"D\" word.

Here in the Triangle of NC a burn ban is in effect. We had a nice even distribution of rain days in the spring and most of the summer but we have not had any rain in weeks. Maybe longer. Some of the little towns are having to tighten up on water usage. I don't remember them doing that in the late fall.

What is wierd is that the water management people are drawing down the lakes. Or at least I think they are doing so. One flood control lake had the usual amount of water Friday. But Monday you could see stumps in the lake. They usually draw down the lakes this time of year. I have always assumed because of possible hurricanes late in the year as well as winter rains. But I don't really now for sure....

Last year at this time we got lots of rain. And it kept on raining for months. I can remember wallowing in the mud with me and the tractor. But not this year.

We had fairly large fire a county north of where I work that took a major effort to control and put out. Every time it would be controled, the wind would pick up and off they would have to go again....

Need some rain.....

Later...

Re: The \"D\" word.

Here in central PA we have been in a drought watch for quite a while. I heard last night the authorities were contemplating a warning.

Re: The \"D\" word.

I heard on today's weather we were 13% below normal in the DC area. According to WMZQ radio weather you have to get to 15% for a drought. Must mean we NEED rain. I drive through Rock Creek park daily and the creek was up to the top in some places from that water main that broke yesterday. Too bad that wasn't from the rainfall.

Re: The \"D\" word.

Pretty dry out here in the Shenandoah valley too. Second or third year of below-normal rain/snow fall.
Burn bans in effect in both VA and WV.

Haven't heard of anyone's well going dry yet. keeping fingers crossed.

Re: The \"D\" word.

Here in upstate NY, it's been real dry, although they're not officially calling it a drought. Our creek is real low. It rained for the past two days, but it hasn't made a dent in our creek. I think we need alot more rain!!!

Re: The "D" word.

Well Georgia is into another year of no rain. We are 7.5" below normal now and we ended up about 12" below last year. This is our 4th year with below normal so we welcome every drop that comes our way. Ditto on the burn bans.

Re: The \"D\" word.

Terry, its like WV Bill said burn bans in effect but the funny thing is were going camping this weekend at lake moomaw and they said we could have a campfire (go figure) and the governor is the one that imposed the burn ban. According to the news we a 4" behind normal precip, No problems here yet(fingers crossed) with wells going dry. Everyone here was worried they were going to cancel muzzle loading season.

Re: The \"D\" word.

South Central Oklahoma is dry but not parched. Ponds are full but not enough surface moisture to germinate the annual ryegrass (200 lbs) I put out a couple weeks ago. Had a light rain but not enough to get it going. Experts predict a warmer winter with more rain and less snow. Not sure if that is good or bad. Snow delays the introduction of moistureinto the ground/watershed until later but sometimes too much at the same time. Maybe this will be a good thing. Late summer was too dry for too long, rains came too late to help haying. Many made only 10-30% of typical hay crop volume so feed will be expensive this winter.

Re: The \"D\" word.

Things have turned around up here in SE Michigan. July and August were close to drought conditions. Totally dry, very hot and not at all what we expect for mid-summer. Since early September we've had more than 12" of rain. Things are getting back to normal, maybe even a little ahead of average.

Re: The \"D\" word.

Quite a few folks in this area have been cutting their second (and final) cutting of hay in the past two weeks, but it's very poor quality hay because of the lack of rain.

Re: The \"D\" word.

In the San Francisco Bay area (a relatively dry place to begin with), the current rainfall totals are especially low. I heard the weather guy on the radio the other day saying that San Jose is at 15% of normal for this year (rainfall year runs June-June). This in a place that only gets about 13" in a good year. Needless to say, things are very dry.

Re: The \"D\" word.

NE Connecticut is very dry, most of the ponds and rivers are way down. Some people in my town who have dug wells are having problems. On the upside blowing the leaves into the woods is a piece of cake.

Re: The "D" word.

I think we have been getting all your share of rain over here in the Highlands of Scotland. There have only been a few dry days all year /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif. We have been up here for seven years now and it has been the wettest so far. Still, got to keep all those lochs topped up.

Scotland? Wow! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif This board has quite a reach.

I realize you've been with us for a while, Andy, but I seem to have overlooked where you are. Love to hear more from you. And of course pictures would be a bonus. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Maybe you could take some snapshots of what you plan to work on with your tractor when you get it. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Re: The \"D\" word.

I have recently bought a scanner - no digital camera yet as I am waiting for the quality/price ratio to even out a bit - so I will post some photos sometime soon when I get the time to scan them in. I may even have a photo somewhere of Loch Ness which is not far from where we live. You will see where all the rain ends up /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Regards
