one of my faves as well. What talent.

After my chores today, I spent a few hours listening to Steely Dan and reading album covers and jackets (all of my stuff is vinyl). Their sound was unique - you could always tell a Steely Dan song, and yet they didn't sound the same. I'm sure Donald Fagen will go on, but it just won't be the same..

I'm very surprised that more members haven't commented. Perhaps too eclectic.

I was sitting on patio last evening enjoying a good cigar, some Jack Daniels, listening to Steely Dan on iHeartRadio, when I read your post?
Think I felt a chill. I was listening to Deacon Blues from the Aja album.

I liked a lot of hard rock back when, but was also/am still a Big Tyme Steely Dan fan.

As a pup, at the time I didn't recognize how heavily jazz influenced them, but came to understand better as I spent more time listening to jazz later in life.

Kim Mitchell (Canadian rocker) commented on Steely Dan a few years back - in the day, a studio musician had definitely "made it" when they were invited to record with Steely Dan. "Yo Babe, let's track" is what they used to say, heading to the studio.

Kim figured recording in LA at night, at that level, was pretty much as good as it could get.

I don't really think of them as eclectic so much as unique. As Dave mentioned, very heavy jazz influence. That was never all that common in popular rock music. I always liked Steely Dan's music, but don't consider myself a huge fan. Excellent music written and performed by by excellent musicians.

Lost two today. Don Williams died at 78. Troy Gentry 50 (Montgomery Gentry) died in a helicopter crash in New Jersey.

Sad day.

Walter Becker - Certainly very talented and will be missed. I always liked their music - definitely no mistaking them for another group. As for electic, I don't if they had any 3-chord songs - many closer to 30 chords.
