The day the music died.

Long overdue. Nights in White Satin may be their most well known album and the one that got the most play but there are so many more. Days of Future Past was perhaps my favorite.
I had not heard that song in quite a while, until I went to a Doc Watson concert. Heard his version of the song and it took me a moment to remember who originally did it.

Here we are barely into the new year and another great musician has passed. Ray Thomas, one of the founding members of The Moody Blues has passed at the age of 76. One of my all time favorite groups!

Well that sux!

One and the same. "Nights In White Satin" was on the "Days of Future Passed" album.
Personally, I preferred some of their later, less "artsy" material.

Country music is dying also...Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Merle Haggard and many many more.
Todays country is pure garbage to me...turn off the radio. So sad.
At least there's still Willie's Roadhouse On Sirius !
I never have enjoyed those types of shows, all it is, is that industry hyping itself anyways.
And since most of it becomes a political statement I have even less desire to watch.

Yeah, I also could do without every awards show being a platform for some political statement. I'm sure there's considerable pressure on attendees to conform whether they believe in the cause du jour or not.

As far as music quality goes, funny how no matter what generation you belong to, they somehow seem to stop making "good" music right around the time you hit 30.
I can't be the only 60something guy who still enjoys modern music.

I admit that I used to feel that way. I'm 51, and I find great new music all the time. As with most people, though, it's within the confines of genres and subgenres that I already like. Most of it is found via the internet, and not on commercial broadcast radio. I long had the sinking notion that there were no good new prog bands after the 1970s. I found I couldn't have been more wrong once someone pointed me to a couple of internet sources. There is so much music out there that most people have never heard, and new bands popping up all the time ... so much so that now I lament the inability to buy and listen to enough of it.

I think that is one of the great benefits of our modern computer age; record company support and radio play are no longer required for good music to find a wide audience.

Like PJ I’m 51 and I like a lot of modern rock. I believe he’s right about the genre. Grew up on rock music. Lotta guys my age only like the stuff they heard in 70’s or 80’s. I liked ac/dc and the like but have heard it too much. Prefer “nowadays” headbanging rock.:dance1:

I could do without every awards show, period. Can't stand watching those elitist hypocrites pat each other on the back. Makes me gag.

Agreed about the awards show being political but they were always too much of a self congratulations fest to be of any interest to me.

Most of the new stuff on the radio is just scat. People can't sing. They can't play instruments. They can't write lyrics. I really wonder how this stuff gets air play. This morning I heard a song for the first time. The woman could not sing. Her voice was horrible. The lyrics were a step above grunts and groans. Words were "sung" but I sure would not call them lyrics. She was trying to set up a hook but it sound like woof, woof, woof. How did that get on the air? Usually, I tune out the music portion of the radio show I listen too in the morning but this "song" was so bad it made me listen. It sound like something they put together in a few hours. They recorded some noise they called music. Add some words, grunts, groans, sound affects, and woof, woof, woof and said ship it!

I heard a three member teenage band on the Woodsong show over the weekend. Those kids had some TALENT! They could play some really hard music and they had to WORK to get the skills to play their instruments and not to mention what it took to play the song that was on the show. Yet, you will never hear those kids on the main stream radio. Instead, we get some woman singing woof, woof, woof.:thumbdown:

Exactly, we are not longer held hostage to the local radio station get to what they think is good music. The music I have bought over the last few years has been from groups I have seen on Austin City Limits or various PBS folk music shows. One group I saw on PBS and they were two brothers and a sister. My dad and I were watching the show and were very impressed with their talents and skills. I spent too many hours late at night and early into the wee hours of the morning listening/watching their videos taken at various shows.:laughing::laughing: I bought all of their CDs too. :D Unfortunately, the oldest brother was in college, had to finish his MBA, and it looks like he got married and had a kid so the family band broke up. The sister went off to school and has her own band but I have not seen/heard what she is doing. They have some of the best music I have ever listened too!

One night I was listening to ACL while working on the computer. This band comes on and they REALLY got my attention. Twas The Avett Brothers and I spend WAY too many late nights and early mornings listening to their concerts and songs on You Tube. :confused2: I would hear one song, even an entire concert, and have to listen to more. :confused3::laughing::laughing::laughing: They would keep me up until 3-4am!:laughing::laughing::laughing: I would wake up the family from tapping in time with their songs! :D I have bought many of their CDs and they even have a CD of Gospel music they made with their father and sister that is most excellent.

But I will never hear The Avett Brothers on the local stations even though they are from NC.:mad: But by gum, I can listen to some no talent woman "sing" woof, woof, woof.:D:D:D

Later,
Dan
