Yes that one of mine seems to not have power, the 1st few years I had mine I had trouble with the time moving in the distributor and one day I was going to work I pulled out of a gas station and the darn thing started missing and sputtering and 25 mph was the best I could do and it quit on me in town and I ended up having to get a whole new distributor put on it,also I was backing with it in low range one time(turning it around in my mothers driveway) and the splines in the driveshaft stripped out, about $400 on that job.

I have a '93 1500 Chevy W/T that has 207,000 miles on the 6 cylinder. It still runs good & I drive it every day. Others that I have spoke with have had similar experiences with this motor. It does smoke briefly at startup, but actually uses very little oil considering the mileage. I will drive this until the motor does go, if it ever does, & then put another identical reconditioned motor in it. The body is in excellent condition. I hear that you can pick them up for about $800. I know that this truck is not designed for a truck pull, but it serves me very for transportation to work & a utility pick up.
Regarding the full body Ford cars (Crown Vic & Marquis), I feel that they are excellent vehicles for the money. What a value, considering what you get for 1/2 the price of other comperable brands. They are usually well maintained, have the luxury accessories, & have great reliability. I'm considering that route for my next car.

Ain't that the truth! Past experiences will weigh heavily on future decisions/purchases for all of us.
Bird, I could tell you some stories about the Plymouths we used! Had one w/440 magnum that burnt up a 17 gallon tank of fuel for every eight hour shift....normal registered miles per shift was around 70 miles total. How's that for being conservation minded? First thing you did with that car at the start of a shift was run it out to the Airport, and open it up on a taxi strip to blow the carbon out of it so that it would run halfway decent. It required a valve job about every 3 months. Too much engine for idling around town, or (as it was used) traffic enforcement. Fords? Well, we never had any real problems that I remember of. Never had any Chev's to work with, so no experience there....workwise that is.
I liked the Plymouths with the smaller engines, they were regular workhorses, the 400's were ok, but that 440 just was used in the wrong type of situation.

Yep, Scruffy, the 440 was not noted for fuel economy./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif For a few years we had a '72 Chrysler Town & Country station wagon with a 440 , 4 bbl, that was a good car for road trips and pulling a little travel trailer (4 years old when I bought it and I got it cheap after I showed the dealer how I could tell it had been badly wrecked in the rear end - but not a bad repair job) and I never had a problem with it carboning up, but I had also bought one of the first Roadrunners ('68) with that high performance 383 and I had to blow the soot out of it nearly every time I drove it, after my wife driving it around town for awhile, and I changed the spark plugs every 12k miles (right rear was a booger to get to). My wife still says that was her favorite car, and it really was a good one if you didn't mind that 12 mpg./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

a Step brother had a Roadrunner 68 or 69 with the 440 in it, he thought it was a mean machine...until I whupped the pants off it with my 67 AMC Rebel SST with a 390. That SST got even 'badder' when I bored, stroked it, and added a cam, carburation, etc to it. Time I got it on the road again, it was rated at 550 hp, and drank like an alki locked in a winery!/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif That turkey was good for one trip (almost) through town, and then it was highway time to blow the carbon out of it. Wouldn't get over 45-50 for a couple miles, and then would start 'cleaning up'! Sure did scoot though! Only put 1500 miles on the rebuild, and sold it. Couldn't afford the gas , tires, etc anymore! Would burn off a set of T/A 60 series radials in 3000 miles, half that on the rears.

A 390 with 315 hp vs a 440 with 375 hp. According to http://cccvette.com/1969musclecars.htm the 440 ran a 14.4 at 102 mph. No info for the Rebel SST, but a Javelin with the same engine ran a 15.2 at 92 mph. You musta been some driver /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Hey,

I don't know if I'd put too much stock in those numbers. According to that site, my '65 Corvette with a 396 ci 425 hp will run the 0 to 60 at 4.8 seconds which may or may not be true...but it also rates the '67 427 ci 435 hp at 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds. I'm pretty sure the '67 was faster and was also actually running around 450hp but was listed lower for insurance purposes.

Must have been a sick Roadrunner, Scruffy./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I never had anyone try to outrun my Roadrunner, except one fellow in a Chev. SS396 and I left him behind in a hurry.

So that's where the 396 in Jeff396 comes from? I had a '68 327/350 4 speed coupe back in 1976. Bought it right before I got married which did not make my intended too happy. I suppose I wasn't supposed to keep it because one month after I had it, it backfired through the carb and caught on fire. I heard the backfire and looked in the rear view mirror to see smoke trailing from the car. Pulled off the road as soon as I could, into a gas station no less, right across the street from a fire station! They came and put it out, but it was too late. Total loss. However, I got twice what I paid for it in the insurance settlement which paid for the honeymoon which the better half always seems to forget. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Scruffy, it was 292. I had a 59 fairlane with the 292. My Dad had a 56 Ford wagon with a 312 (it had valve covers with Thunderbird on them) Yea, I think the 312 was a bored out 292.
I have never really had a preferance for one brand over another. My Dad was a MoPar man, mainly because he got a discount on them/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif In 73 I bought a new Dodge Charger, that was a lemon. Great looking car, a real head turner at the time, but an owners nightmare. That was the last Chrysler product I owned until we bought the Cherokee, 2 yrs. ago.
