sounds good, all --

-- the articles speak for themselves, as does responsible ownership of animals, whether they be domestic or farm animals --

-- and deep inside, you know they're just as sensitive as you are -- they feel pain, they feel cold, they feel heat, and especially with dogs, they want to be with you, since they're social animals.

-- so, keep your "big man" exterior going, but again, deep inside, you know -- and can do -- better.

why not leave the pup inside when you're at work in a crate?
I'd imagine it's a lot nicer inside in the winter and summer for your pups --
Personally, I would prefer to be a run like he has to a crate. Noting to do in a crate and not much room.

how about we put a little coat on you and keep you outside year-round in iowa?
you'll pant like the devil in the summer, and freeze in the winter, getting hypothermia and frost-bite on your ears and toes --
-- and you won't be able to tell anyone about it --
-- that's really hard to understand, in my eyes --
-- it isn't 1920 any more, people.
Have you spent any time in one of the dogloos like he has? When I was a teenager we used to play in one and they are surprisingly cool in the summer (with the doorflap off) and they are toasty warm in the winter (with a doorflap installed).
I would be willing to sleep in one with a coat that would completely cover me down to 0 degrees or so.

I don't post on here much at all, but I read daily and this one is uncalled for.

First off, Huskerplowboy, very nice kennel you built.

OK, I've heard enough and really want to get this one going. Let's hear how we should keep our dogs, both inside and outside kept dogs. Since you say you're not PETA, but I assume HSUS, this should get interesting since they are anti dog hunting. Please tell me how I abuse my dogs as I keep them outside. I had a neighbor who called me in and he barely got out of a trespassing violation and both the police and dog warden laughed when they looked at the condition of my kennels when he said they were in kennels that were too small (that are endorsed by the AKC, by the way). I treat my hounds like my children, probably better kept and cared for more than house dogs. Please don't come on here and expound how people should keep their dogs . As long as they are not being abused, which really makes me sick, you have no right to judge any of us.

You are prejudging people for the way they keep their dogs without knowing all of the facts. Should we prejudge you for rescuing probably the most vicious breed there is. I mean all of the websites that list them as the #1 cause of attacks for all breeds can't be wrong. I'm sure I can find a ton of links to back me up on that. The examples you listed earlier were all examples of neglect, and that is a cause for concern.

Sorry for the rant to the rest of you, this one just really chapped my a**.

i guess you don't google then?
try "dogs left outside frozen" --
-- and get this response --
Frozen Dog Barely Survives Surgery After Rescue - WDAF
please, sir, help us interpret this article --
<snip>
-- please, tell us what "really" happened to that chow --
From the story (and the previous stories linked from there) the chow was HIT BY A CAR and then (wounded and ignored by its owners) it almost froze to death.
Not exactly the same as putting a healthy German Shepherd in a run with a heated water bucket during the day while you are at work.

here is another one --
-- google "dogs die in heat" --
and get this one --
Two dogs die in heat | WIVB.com
just this past summer --
-- again, please shine your wisdom on this story --
Again, putting a dog out in a covered run with a bucket of water and a dogloo to go into is just a little bit different than "Luper left her two dogs, a male and a female American Bull Dog mix, chained to the house with no access to shade or water from 7:30 AM until 12:40 PM"

sounds good, all --
-- the articles speak for themselves, as does responsible ownership of animals, whether they be domestic or farm animals --
The articles you linked provide evidence that if people dont take care of their dogs bad things can and do happen.

-- and deep inside, you know they're just as sensitive as you are -- they feel pain, they feel cold, they feel heat, and especially with dogs, they want to be with you, since they're social animals.
And what should be done during the day when one has to be at work if one has a dog who is from a breed that is known to be an active breed? Coop them up in a kennel in the house where they can be in the AC but will be bored to tears? Especially when said dog apparently loves to be in "her" run?

-- so, keep your "big man" exterior going, but again, deep inside, you know -- and can do -- better.
What does this have to do with the proper care of a dog??? :confused2: Or with the fact that a member on here built a very nice run for his dog to improve its living arrangements and posted the pictures for us to enjoy and possibly copy?

I have 4 dogs my self. They have 14x14 outside yard and a 12 x 14 building they go in to that has about three feet of staw in it, along with blankets and everything else. IN the dog out that is made out of full sheets of plywood we keep a trebbel light in the top of it to help keep it warm. It is so warm the dogs dont want to come in the house.

I have a shepard lab mix that doesnt get cold. Last winter we had some -25 degree nights so i brought 3 of the 4 in and put them in the basement. Cole my lab shepard mix wouldnt come in the house, he slept outside all night. Didnt even go back to his kennel, he slept at the door of the house. Doesnt want in but that is where he stayed. You have to take into consideration the type of dog as well. Look at huskeys and seld dogs those dogs survive in -60 degree weather and its normal to them.

German Shepards have very thick fur with alot of undercoat, if they get wet they will get cold other wise they are good to go untill the most extream temps. Other then their paws, they dont have the hair between their toes some dogs do. Still Being outside in a kennel with warm water and a dog house that she can curl up in. Many dogs should be so lucky.

Its getting to the point i am very happy with my dogs, they stay around me all day outside working never go any where. At night before i have a chance to put them up they go back to their dog house and go to bed on their own. Dont even have to tell them, didnt even lock the gate last night.
