Use the manufacturer's recommended gear lube. Some gear systems may contain non-ferrous metals. This likely requires GL-4 gear oil. If there are no non-ferrous metals, GL-5 with the EP additives is the correct choice. The so-called "stinky" gear lubes with EP additives tolerate much higher loads without shearing. You won't smell them once they are installed in the gearcase. I add some MOS2 to my gearcases which further reduces friction. I also use Molybdenum Disulfide fortified NLGI II greases on my machinery. The EP aditive "Moly" is found fin engine oils, greases and other lubricants. It is also used in gun lubricants. The stuff is very slippery and promotes a considerable reduction in friction and tolerates high heat. It reduces gear wear under high load conditions.
