I had a grate made from 1/2 inch cold roll. It lasted 2 years.

Now is "cold roll" (like 1008) softer or harder than 304ss and 316ss?

I generally try to run 550 to 600 deg on the outside of the stove pipe about 6-8" from the top of the stove. Here is my grate. IMG_20160229_214532260.jpg

The only difference between Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled is the process. HR will have scale. CR won't.

I think your right on both points, I'll see if I afford a cast stove grate.

Wood Stove Grates and similar google returns.

Grates are out there, but they are not cheap. If we lived in rural China, the local foundry would pour you anything needed for a few bucks. ;-)

I made one of Monel... seems to be holding up although really can't burn anymore so I suppose it will last forever.

I've heard of inconel somewhere, not sure if it comes in flat bar or plate, probably is way out of my budget. At work we use copper nick-cal piping
When you say rifle action, is that like lever action rifles, didn't know that titanium was used in guns, but I only have a few old west stile guns.

Can't speak for much about Inconel but the 751 was used for the exhaust valves in Pontiacs Super Duty 455 and supposedly can withstand sustained temps of 1600 degrees + also has been used in Gas turbine blades.

Chuck Yeagers X-15's outer skin was made from Inconel X 750. That had to be Crazy Expensive back then...but getting to Mach 6 in the 1960s is still impressive today.
Cast iron sure seems to be popular for grates and would seem to be a whole lot more cost effective.

Some of you guys out there are quite clever on the com. I click on that link and it freak me out, for a minute I thought my laptop got hack into by the North Koreans. I started seeing words being typed, arrow going across my screen, Amazing trick.
I bought that stuff long time ago, went to a steel shop and asked for screen like stuff made of steel with diamond shape holes, know wonder he didn't know what I talking about. But you might have something there, I'll look into that see how thick it comes, might be able double layer it.

Seams like a lot of good input here, got to read few more of these post tonight.
