you can pull out them seeds, wash em & soak em in salt water for a while then bake em in the oven for a while untill golden brown & eat like toasted nuts or pp cprn. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif yummy

Nice pumpkin. My son who's eight started selling pumpkins and gourds last year. No paper routes in the country to make money so since our deed title is Pumpkin Village Settlement that's the way we went /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif!
We went to the fair this year and saw a 965lb pumpkin. Now he's all spun up to grow a big one. Told him that's fine but the little ones are were he makes his money. He quite the little business man. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif He's doubled his gourds this year and added indian corn. He has a 100x100 ft. patch and we'll double it next year for his younger brother to get involved with. He'll be five . We have alot of fun with it even with the weeding!

Al, I never grew pumpkins to sell, however my kids did help me grow bell peppers which we sold to the local grocery stores. At ages 10 and 12, this was their first job...and they worked quite hard at it. (they are now 20 /22) I told them to set a goal of something they wanted, and when they made half of the money needed, I would give them the other half. My son wanted a gocart, and can't remember what my daughter wanted. They soon realized that it was going to take longer than they thought, and surprised me by pooling their money and going for the gocart. (one of the few times they worked together). Ole Dad had to fork over the dough earlier than he expected.
Mark, as far as pumpkin seeds go.... I have tried them in the past. I pretty much like all kinds of nuts/seeds... like sunflower seeds...but just don't really see or look for pumpkin seeds very often. Isn't there another name for roasted pumpkin seeds?
Egon, I prefer squash pie to pumpkin actually. We used to grow cewshaw ? ....specifically for pies. My sister who makes everything out of zucchini ... made me a pie from zucchini this summer, and I must say it was quite good.
The pumpkin growing around here was cut short this year due to some really hot and wet weather. It seemed to just cook the plants. That is why I cut mine early.

Nice pumpkin! I planted 580 plants this year but the wet spring combined with the hot/dry summer didn't do my plants any good. I still have quite a few, but not as I had hoped. I planted seeds from a big one (500+ pounds) and while the plant started out great it never pollinated. The plant itself is still doing well, just not producing?
Oh well, the Topsfield fair is coming up next month. I'll soon get my eyefull of big pumpkins!
I think someone said that last year you had to have one over 1,000 lbs. to be in the top ten!

Great pumpkins.
I planted 1200 last year. First time I had planted on a large scale. Was going to donate to youth and childrens church group I work with for a fund raiser with them keeping all the proceeds. the pumpkins were looking great, 12 different types, all shapes and sizes.
Then the hurricane came through western NC last year /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. The river that boarders the bottom had not flooded since 1948. I went down to check my pumpkins the day after the rains stopped and all that was left was one pumpkin in the middle of the field /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Over 3000 washed away.
The bright side is there are pumpkins growing all over the Catawba River basin this year /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Did not have time to plant this year. My dad has Alzhimers and had to get him placed in a nursing home. Only 69 years old, sad, makes you stop and think about life and what your future holds.
I'll try to plant again next year.
