the last person paying bills by check?

I used to pay my bills with cash, too, as I worked downtown and the utilities had offices downtown. I'd take a walk, pay my bills and get some lunch. However, gas company, phone company, and electric company no longer allow bill paying at their offices. Only the water works. And since we moved out of town, we have well water, so I couldn't pay my bills in person if I wanted to. Now that I think of it, we send checks to gas, phone and electric, so that's 3 per month. Cell bill is by card. Credit card is tied to our checking account, so no payments there. Taxes twice per year are check. Car loan is by check. So we're up to 4 per month. Can't think of anything else. 50 per year, and I'm sure my wife writes checks to the church and school so more than I thought until I thought some more!

I can remember my maternal grandmother riding the bus downtown once a month to pay all their bills in person in cash. I can't imagine anyone doing that now.

Re: Am I the last person paying bills by check?

I wrote 4 checks in 2014 and only one in 2015.

My wife writes all the checks too.

Pay about half of bills online, half by check. Never use a check in a store.

I guess I am a dinosaur. I pay all bills with checks. I do have direct deposit- my employer's bank and mine are the same. I also had my mortgage at the same bank and I had direct payment for my mortgage. I do use a debit card for gas purchases, because you have to pre-pay. I use the debit card each week to get money from the ATM for purchases- I won't be the guy holding you up at the mini-mart!

Re: Am I the last person paying bills by check?

Time is the only thing we can't buy or get more of. I was at the grocery store in the 10 or less items line. The guy in front of me had less than 10 items. So far ok. The cashier rang up his items with a total. He was wearing a backpack. He proceeded to remove the backpack, dug around and found his checkbook, then wrote out the check. The rest of us could have gone through the line, paid and been out the door. He was an inconsiderate ***hole. I hope you have a little more consideration for other people than that.

It's usually women who behave like that. You can see it about every time. Wait until the register totals, lift the bag to the counter, dig around for the wallet, then look thru the wallet to see if there's enough money in it, go to the checkbook, open it, write it out, fill out the ledger, then hand the check to the cashier, I can't tell you how many times I've experienced that while standing in line.

I bet this guy was wearing sandals too.

Anyone have a good experience with using a VPN when on a public network? We are snowbirds in Florida staying in hotels and do not want to pay the monthly bills while on a public hotel network. If I use my iPhone using cell vs wifi is that better/less risk? What VPN do you use and how expensive and difficult to use?

Thanks

Re: Am I the last person paying bills by check?

I carry almost no cash... prefer credit card with the protections and rewards offered.

agreed. I run everything I possibly can thru credit. those that don't take credit I do an epay online ( echeck? ).

I have about ( on average ) 1 real paper check to write a month ).

Cash varies. Unless I am heading out to buy something needing cash.. I too, don't carry much.

We use very few personally written checks but we do electronic bill pay where I send out the check electronically. I did an automatic bill pay ONCE in my life and I do not see myself doing that again. PITA with errors and getting changes done correctly.

Re: Am I the last person paying bills by check?

I still pay by check as I don't want my checking account online anywhere---However, if the postal service keeps raising stamp prices, I might bite the bullet to save a not insignificant amount of money---I work for a bank too.

40 some years ago the wife and I got into a "stamp collecting" mood. I recently went back through it and extracted all the unused US stamps. I'll never have to buy anoher stamp and the heirs will inherit a bunch.
