Phil and Dick,

Well, I don't have a crow problem here, so I'm not familiar with that. We do have the "Nut Case Boer" that I spray to keep from ruining my crop. I really have a bumper crop this year and am very pleased.

My main problems are deer, turkey, racoons, squirls and of course those dreaded Diamond back rattle snakes. I do put up old used Computer CDs in the trees in the orchard to help with some of that. They reflect light in different ways and it seems to help.

After my initial tilling in the garden/orchard I do not till real deep, just enough to irradicate the emerging weeds and grass. I feel that all of the growth competes for water, and in the garden I only want my trees and vegetables to win that competition.

I really do enjoy how easy it is to till and keep the area looking manicured with the tractor pulled tiller. Phil, once you become comfortable with your tiller you will be amazed at how you can use it.

Sorry I don't have more knowledgable information on the crow repulsion.

Artificial prey?? I see owls and bird of prey hanging in nut trees occasionally. I don't know if it works.

Mark,

I had an apple orchard in New Mexico for 25 plus years and I used all sorts of artificial deterents. The main thing one has to do is move them around as the birds get used to them and know they are fake. They sometimes work for a while, but I think the ones that look like large eyes, you can purchase them at several of the nursery and see companys, worked the best. They are hung up and a light breeze makes them move...but even with that you must move their location fairly often to be effective.

I have built collapsable cages that I put around my trees. It works for me. I can tell you out here where I live we have the birds. But, it is certainly worth trying. Good recomendation Mark.

I see Dick and I have the same problem with crows.
I tried to hang CD in the trees : it works for a while then crows get used to them. I tried to hang a dead crow in the trees : bad smell and few results. I tried to put a beach umbrella (with very nice coloured stripes !) in the tree : no way ! Really I think I will never eat pecans here in Corsica :
One more remark , I have macadamia nuts trees too : crows don't eat them because they are too hard to crack (you need a vise for cracking them).
