The part about mowing early is good, since they are soft (and edible!) when the shoots first erupt from the ground. However, they come up already the size that the shoot will be when it is tall, and the running types run before they come up.

In other words, you could easily have a 3" or 4" shoot come up 50 feet from your main stand. If you don't catch it quickly (the day it comes up), that shoot will grow about a foot and a half a day until it is happy with itself. It hardens fairly quickly, too.

Trust me, I've been through your thought process and tried it, and all you have to do is go out of town for the weekend during the growing season. The next thing you know, you come home and your stand just got bigger. Mowing it will just make it mad.

Before you do it check with your state's Ag Dept...for your sake and the sake of every land owner around you.

You may be right. I have much work to do on the new home build before I consider any bamboo planting. I will check before I plant.
