Actually, only about 15% of the oil used in the US comes from the middle east, most of our oil comes from Venezuela and Canada...........
As to the steel situation, it's true China has been growing quickly, but even best economy can suffer setbacks (ie:
Japan), their day will come, especially with such a fractious government........

I don't think Australia is about to starve, per capita i think we rate very well. )</font>

Oh, I don't think so either! It's just that Australia's arable land compared to the size of the country is very low.

What I'm really saying is that the USA and South America are very fortunate to have the land and weather we have. We can always feed ourselves cheaply. Other countries can feed themselves fine, but at a much higher price, which leads to importing food from the US and South America. )</font>

Yes, you have plenty of bauxite, but aren't quite as blessed as the USA with the massive amounts of electricity it takes to process it.

The alumina refinery at Gladstone run by Queensland Alumina Limited is the world's largest. The refinery produces more than 3 million tonnes of alumina per year, contributing over $300 million annually to Australian export earnings. It employs around 1000 people. Part of the refinery's output is processed into aluminium by Boyne Smelters Limited, south of Gladstone. 1200 people work at the smelter. Around 70% of its aluminium is exported.

Per the latest available data (November 2004) from the API,
20% of all our imports come from the middle east, and the biggest suppliers to the U.S. are Canada, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Venezuela, in that order.
