the price of steel

( And it's going to get worse sorry to say. There's only so much steel in the world and capitalism is taking ahold in places you'd never have thunk. Think of China. Then consider how much more steel is needed even in the cheapest car you can imagine versus that in a bicycle. Then consider the difference in steel needs in a highway for cars and trucks versus that needed in a bike path. )

You make an excellent point. Most Americans are to fat, myself included /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif , and should start riding bikes for around town transportation.

I got the HFC are you kidding me price last year buying 2 24' sections of 2x2x1/8 box and a 4x8 sheet of heavy expanded metal for ~$160.

A few days ago I bought a 8' 2x2x1/4 outside diameter, a 8' 2x2x3/16 inside diameter and a few feet of 1" round and tube to go with it for $132.

I just bought a piece of 1/4 " plate 32 inches by 48 inches and a couple pieces of 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 angle and 2 pieces of 1/4" flatbar for $92.00. I couldn't believe it. Had to have it though. Couldn't make it with plastic....

Artificial market inflation. Someone's getting padded pockets
and it's wall street.

I get to see people travel China and Hong Kong in my daily business and the Chinese don't know what we're talking about.

Doh!

About a year before the steel prices jumped I was looking at H beams at a yard in NJ. The stuff was from Pakistan. I'm hoping that greed kicks in and the manufacturers start adding capacity. If that happens, prices will drop in the future.

Heh...kids are stealing man hole covers to sell for scrap. They bring about $5 per manhole cover. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I notice in Harbor Freight you can still by a pretty big drill press for ~.90 per pound, and an anvil for ~.75 per pound.

With higher steel prices, maybe the steel mills will increase capacity and put some American people to work...and bring steel prices down.

Since the oil prices hit $50 per barrel, offshore drilling activity is really jumping, and putting lots of local people to work at good wages and benefits. I'm thinking steel should do about the same thing.

Just read an article from AP the other day about the steel execs...."the CEO's of US Steel and International Group cashed out 34.8 million and 40.1 million respecively. That's on top of annual salary. One guy from US Steel stepped down and made nearly 46 million, which on top of exercised options, includes an 825,225 salary, a bonus of 3 million, a retension bonus of 3 million, and another 2.7 million as part of a consultation agreement." YIKES! Looks like the only ones that can afford new steel prices are the execs!
