Bought my first tractor, a CUT, in August 05. My Dad, now gone, had John Deeres until '56 when he bought M.Moline. Bought two of them through the years and then an Oliver. I have the old Oliver now-the Molines are long gone. Thought of getting the Oliver running but its really too big for what I need and since its no longer made, well, you know about finding parts.......... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Anyhow, I bought a JD because Deere is still here and when my boys get my tractor, hopefully not for a few more years, I like to think that Deere will still be around with parts for my 5203. We'll see I guess. Anyhow, that and a dealer I really liked is why I bought green. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Things may be a little different with the larger models. My experience with JD has only been with a 4100 compact and an LT150 mower. I have not been overly impressed, not to the point of calling them top of the line anyhow. The 4100 had rear axle troubles with low mileage, took about a month to get it fixed(brother in-laws tractor). My Lt and his both had fit and finnish issues and began showing rust within a year of purchase. Along with several other things, they arent bad, but not "top of the line" any more in my opinion.

Like I said, maybe its a small tractor issue for them, but it leaves questions.

Ihave owned an old ford 5000 for 4yr. and just added a new kubota B3030. Awsome tractor for size I really considered deere but 4000-5000 more fore comparable features. I truly think some people buy deere only to say they own deere. I admit I am new to this forum, but after reading for a while I am beginning to think that people really overbuy for they'er needs.
I have read where several guy with 5 acers are buying the same tractor I bought and I have 160. I mean be for real 5 acres ? You can mow that with a good lawn tractor!!! I think some guys buy a small plot of land and think they need major construction equipment to take care of it. Buy what you need or buy more land if you really want to have a need.

I agree completely. Not saying I wouldnt concider a JD for my next tractor, but I bought a Yanmar with several attachments for much less than I could have bought the comperable name brand used. Yanmar also makes JD's small engines. They dont claim to be the best so I dont expect everything to be perfect. It is a preference thing though. I will likely always buy Fords though others would never concider it for their own reasons. I too believe in the right tool for the job, but in some cases I'll buy something bigger than I will ever need, just so I dont have to say "I wish I had something large neough to do _(whatever)__"..

You may laugh, but one thing that caused me pause on the newer JD utility tractors was the fact that they now use "John Deere" engines. I think this only shows my hesitancy to go with an "unknown" to me. I have bought several new JD tractors over the years, and they all had Yanmar engines in them. The engines were the smoothest running, most durable, and least troublesome engines I could ever ask to own. I positively never had a Yanmar engine that ever required a single repair.

Now don't go thinking that I'm saying that the new John Deere engine is bad; only I am not as familiar or comfortable with it. Besides, I fled to Kubota a few years ago when JD told me that there would never be a market for an air conditioned factory cab on a utility tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Oopsie! I suppose I'm not the only baby boomer who decided they would like a nice factory cab; JD's new line of cab tractors should be out in a couple of months. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif You know I'll have to check them out. I'd love to hear from someone about the new JD 4720 with cab whenever they come out! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The size of your land only indirectly defines the size of your tractor. If all you do is mow, then perhaps you are right, but it's not the size of your land, but rather what you do with the tractor that matters.

Let's say you have 5 acres, but over a period of 4 years you build a small pond, clear a couple acres of small trees, plow, disk and till that couple acres and convert it to a two acre garden, build a stone bridge over your small stream, bring in rocks to prevent erosion and keep the stream on course, build a barn, keep an acre and a half of treed area clean and clear of brush and chip the deadfall, split your own wood, store it and move it, well you get the idea.

You could also have 160 areas and bush hog 10 and finsh mow another 1.

Which owner needs more tractor?

It's not just how much land you have that determines how much tractor you need.

That said, many people do buy more tractor than they need -- whatever land they own or projects they plan. I think this is true of many things other than just tractors (including food :) ). I think you'll find people who have lawn tractors, then go to the Gym and use the treadmill. I don't see why it has to make sense.

People buy bass boats, when they could just buy fish at the grocery store.

Deere has been making their own diesel engines for many years. I was disappointed they are not yet in the 3x20 series.
I think Deere knows how to make engines. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've been impressed with the performance of the Yanmar engines however.
