The Queen holds Court

Some years ago we spent a two day ferry trip going up the Danube from Vienna to Passau. Think we had to go through six locks. Diesel ferry driven by two pelton type side wheels.

The scenery was terrific.

On board accomadations were small but comfortable. Food was terrific. I noticed that at one stop the wine cellars were replendished.

What was really interesting was a morning observation of the crew prior to starting out. Each had an ounce of Snapps followed by a mug of beer.

In 1963 toured an abandoned [ blocked up on shore ] paddle steamer at Whitehorse, Yukon. It had been stripped of anything of value but still was intriquing.

The Delta Queen comes up to Wabasha/Lake City every so often to. We have a neat picture if I could ever find it of the queen going under neath the new bridge at Wabasha while the old bridge was still in place.

Hey, you are the guys who stole our steamboat /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif! The Delta Queen's mate, the Delta King, sits moored at a dock in Old Sacramento. He's so sad at the loss of his mate that he never goes anywhere. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif He serves as a high class floating hotel and restaurant. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif He has requested that you ask his soul mate to please come home. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The boat in the picture at the top of the page is the DELTA QUEEN.
Every September we have an event called the Stern Wheel Festival.
Have any of you ever heard of it?
People come from all over the country to attend.
Estimated attendance is around 100,000 for the 3 days it runs so it's a pretty big event for a small town!

I've been on this one, The Steamboat Natchez (not nearly as big as Delta Queen). It operates on the Mississippi in New Orleans.

( Have you ever taken a cruise on any of the river boats? My wife occasionally mentions it. We took a cruise in the Bahamas once, but we have never really looked into a cruise on one of these. )

The Texas Department of Transportation offers free cruises daily from Galveston Island to the Bolivar Peninsular and back. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
