I read that 14% of US employment is by federal, state and local governments. That seems pretty high.

Yes and no.

Across the U.S., nearly 24 million people—a little over 15% of the workforce—are involved in military, public, and national service at the local, state and federal levels. Of this number, approximately 16 million are employed in state and local governments. The federal government numbers include active duty military personnel and U.S. Postal Service workers. The U.S. military has about 1.4 million active duty service members and another 800,000 reserve forces. There are approximately 800,000 postal workers. Beyond the military and the postal service, 2 million people—just over 1% of the U.S. workforce or 0.6% of the total population—are permanently employed by the federal government.

Yes, I saw that on the news last night. One of the few sports names I remember from my youth.

Dude, come on! You are building a new house on an old tree farm. That requires assets. One of the reasons I retired was the difficulty of the job. Every day was a Monday. I was paid adequately for my education and experience but believe me, I would not have done for less. There are not a lot of civil servants however there are a lot of contractors. My counterparts at Boeing were being paid more than me. I would not want their job either. It was more stressful than mine. I guess that I was not lucky or smart enough to get one of those low hanging fruit jobs. All the best
again, i got nothing against govt workers personally. I was married to an entire family of govt workers and i loved many of them, liked most, avoided a couple.

the county inspectors here are top notch people, some are my neighbors, i play bluegrass with a one guy. On the other hand, it took 7 weeks to perk my property only to find out later that, for an ADDITIONAL few hundies, i could of had it done by a private sector soil scientist....in 2 days. That is the problem.

And i do not blame any individual for working for the govt. or hold them in contempt but......

Govt employment, including the military, is a HUGE load on our economy. Not only does it take productive people from the work force but it turns them into....govt workers.

It's the system, not the people. The people are just doing what people do, leverage any and all situations they are presented with. Govt employment is a snowball rolling downhill.

As far as my house and tree farm i will say this. I started with absolutely nothing. I paid for every car, house, toy, girl friend, law suit etc I was presented with. i have a decent education, i paid for everything myself. I worked OT for a long time to pay off my student loans. I started a number of business with zero support, most failed.

It irritates me to see my tax dollars, money i actually worked for, being wasted and a LARGE portion goes to personnel expenses. I might not have DESERVED it but, i EARNED it.

The way i look at it is, with govt employment, a person trades 25 years of their life for job security, decent wages and gold plated bennies, including retirement. Job security is written in stone, wages and bennies continue to rise. A nurse working for the VA makes 30% more than a private sector nurse. For my ex and her family, it was the perfect solution. For me it would have been a life of pure misery.

Regarding boeing....i'm pissed off at them. i bought too much of their stock, right before the 2 crashes and the china virus.

The co i briefly worked for, at the very end of my illustrious career, used to rent the anechoic chamber from boeing to test and characterize antennas. It was Big, you could put a lot of hey in that thing.

right.....13 agencies to monitor clean water, 7 miles of admin offices in DC, public school superintendents and their high paid staff everywhere.

my ex was a special ed teacher...used to practice on me....she was paid fractionally from 4-5 different budgets, some state, some county, some federal, some permanent, some short term grants....what a cluster. I bet it takes 200 hard working govt admin folks just to manage that.

From that same article:

Contrary to popular belief in the bloated growth of the U.S. public sector, the size of the federal government proportionate to the total U.S. population has significantly decreased over the last 50 years. It has also shrunk in absolute numbers in terms of both the full-time and part-time workforce.

I wanted to state that in my previous post but didn't have the reference. When I worked for the federal government we ran lean. I do realize every department will be different but generally civil servants are hardworking folks and I enjoyed my time with them. Thanks for the post

Still burns me!
I once observed a city worker, dept head no less, at the door key in hand checking his watch so as to not open the door even a second before end of lunch break.
Same city sends a PU to fetch the grader driver so that he's back 'just in time' for the 90 min lunch break. Naturally at the end of that 90 min lunch the drive him back to the grader.
All told 8 hours produces about 5 real 'soft' hours.
All negotiated by the union.
Oh then a PU is sent to lube the grader as that is not in the driver's job description and next AM they pull the grader back for another assignment.
Bah, Humbug!
