Do you turn on the radio and the announcer is acting all surprised that it is 80F and sunny and beautiful?

Nope. What happens is I turn on the TV, and they show pictures of how cold and snowy it is Up North.

We came to Florida originally, back in 1972, because my wife can't take the cold. Even here, at times when a "cold" front does move through (and I've seen temperatures as low as 19 degrees, which is an event), my wife's discomfort makes me wonder if we should move on down towards the Equator. She was always tall and thin and had a metabolism rate that just seemed to burn all the heat out of her. She's got a little padding now, and doesn't suffer as much /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

I was used to the cold and never realized how much it bothered me until I went without it. I wouldn't dream of going back for love nor money. As they say around here, once you've got sand in your shoes, you're stuck here. We have a cabin in the NC mountains and sometimes go up there in the winter. I can take the snow and cold for three or four days, with the knowledge that I'll soon be heading South.

I remember those cold, crisp, clear, moonlit nights. We had snowshoes also, and would take long hikes with the dog. We probably had similar weather to yours, as we lived in Westford Mass, just about 10 miles South of Nashua. We had 9 wooded acres and an old worked-out granite quarry behind us that covered about 1000 acres, so we had lots of room to roam.

But, I also remember my fingers sticking to the snow blower's shear pins, and I remember having several winter jackets so a couple could be drying out while I got another one soaked in cold, wet rains that lasted for what seemed to be weeks.

I was going to evening classes at BU in those days, after working in Boston all day. My wife worked in Boston, too, and she would wait for me in the Student Union until my classes were done. I can remember coming home at 10 PM and having to shovel and snow blow a path to the door while my wife sat in the car with the heater running. Our driveway was 200' long, so we would cut a pocket at the base of the drive for the car and hoof it in from there, carrying everything (no compact tractors then, and I couldn't have afforded one, anyway). Only to be greeted the next morning with a snow bank pushed up by the street plows that almost covered our little VW Beetle, and had to be dug through before we could start the whole thing over again.

I'm grateful that so many of you like the cold weather, and wish you the best to enjoy it for many years to come, because there isn't enough room in Florida for all of you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OkeeDon I guess it's all in the way you look at it. I personally loved every visit to the Sunshine State that I ever made. But living there full time in July or August makes me think of the faded and damaged paint that I saw on the tops of the many automobiles owned by folks that resided in Florida. The heat was sweltering to say the least.

I guess home really is where you hang your hat.

Mike,

I agree 100% with you. Nice place to visit, but...........

Even with the multitude of golf courses they have, it wouldn't be worth it in the summertime!

Also being in New Hampshire I can relate to how nice it is to sit next to the woodstove and soak up some of that nice heat from the stored solar energy bars glowing inside it. The temperatures in the past two weeks were nice and mild for us at this time of the year.

The cold front which has settled upon us is very common for this time of year. Every region of the country has its good weather and not so good weather. The air cold and crisp, the sky is blue, and the sun is bright, it could be worse.

As far as the weather predictors go I think they get kick backs from the local merchants. They make such a big deal out of the prediction of a little cold or snow flurry it sends people to the stores like a bunch of lemmings. Stocking up on food, batteries, and whatever else just in case the storm comes. Most often they miss the prediction by a mile.

Enjoy the weather and life today where ever you are. I am currently working on an old Glenwood wood cook stove getting it all cleaned up so I can sit next to it.

Our recent trip to Disney World over the holidays with high 70’s and low 80’s for 10 days was something we will never forget. It was great and really got me thinking about moving south. Watching fireworks New Years eve in a T shirt was a great way to start the new year. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But those summers in FLA can really be bad, I hate the heat and high humidity!. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I think the best would be to spend the summers up north say PEI in the Canadian Maritime Provinces and south in the winter. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gifGee only another 15 years till I retire. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gifWith all the baby boomers ahead of me I bet they will close the borders to FLA. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But hey I just entered the new house give away on HGTV for a house on the coast of GA, now if I win that....... I will need a bigger tractor /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yeah the Sunshine State, nice place to visit for a week or so, then I gotta get back to a more temperate climate.
Why is it that when I call my buddies who live in Florida or talk to other Ham Radio operators down there, they always kinda 'flaunt' the weather report? "OK Bob, well it's sunny here , 78 degrees and I 'm having trouble deciding if I want to take a dip in the pool or just continue to sip my cool drink in the shade. By the way, how's the weather up your way?" Like they don't know it's cold here, gimme a break. I can tell you one thing though, from mid May to mid October, you NEVER hear them talking about the 98 degree heat, 98 percent humidity, monsoonal episodes every afternoon. Come that season they somehow 'clam up'.
Anyway, I've lived and visited all around the world and for my money the NorthEast United States and Northern Mid-Atlantic regions with its four different and distinct seasons are the places to be. I LOVE it!

Gee Tom, I'm sorry to tell you this, but my wife has assured me that we're going to be winning that house! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I figure I can put up with the heat if I don't have to pay to build or buy my own place down there! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don,
I am familiar with Westford. I think you would be surprised at the cost of houses there now. I moved up here 5 years ago. We were dealing with a relocation firm hired by my company. Their office was in Westford. The real estate agent picked us up at the hotel and was taking us to the office. They had all the personnal financial info on us. I was looking out the window and said that Westford looked like a nice town and was about to ask how much houses cost when the agent cut me off and said "You can't afford it."

While I did stick with that firm I did not purchase a house from that agent. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

THat's why we moved from Orlando to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Florida was too hot, too flat and too crowded for us. Every time we moved farther out of town town moved up to us. Now we have have four seasons of three months eash...jsut enough time to get sick of one and the other arrives. A little snow in the winter and a couple of weeks of Florida-style heat in the summer. We don't even visit family in the summer down there. We'll go anytime between October and March. You can keep the rest!

Respectfully,
Frank /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
