The Slow Motion Retirement Plan

and so my wife retired on april 28th after over 37 years with what's now lockheed martin (it was martin marietta then). that's another piece of the plan in place, and now there is only one piece outstanding.

in other news, i have decided against being the general contractor and we have been casting about for a builder. i think we've found our guy and he's working with us to get the cost down to what we feel comfortable with. so hopefully in a couple of weeks we'll submit the paperwork for the building permit and we'll get on with the final piece of the plan.

Yup. The house down the street just sold last month with 13 offers, and fetched a price that was $780,000 over asking. Toronto is CRAZY right now!

They were asking $2.495 million - for a tear-down on a 40 ft. lot!

a little blast from the recent past (5/18/2017)

i've been plugging away on the loafing shed, which is now functional if not yet complete

and finally, we have signed a contract with a local builder to get the house done.

it's been a good year for indian paintbrush.

there are also some other colorful objects that have shown up.

and then somebody else showed up with some serious equipment and started digging a big hole.

and so it begins.

on the home front, the hole is finished.

on the personal front, i'm still chipping away at the loafing shed. the west side is complete.

the east side still needs some work.

and this points to one reason we ended up going with a professional builder: it takes me forever to build things. partly this is a function of me thinking things through and/or changing my mind in mid-stream, partly it points to my general lack of experience, and partly it's because i'll be 65 the end of august. i have quite a bit of regret over not building the house myself, but it is the correct decision.
