BATES, WAKE UP, AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR STUFF.

I would love to see an oil analysis performed on dino at 15,000 miles. I hope I don't buy one of the vehicles that Bates has rented or leased.

I do take reasonable care of my stuff because I keep it for awhile. I change my SM rated dino oil and filter every 5k miles. I also keep my cars a minimum of 10 years.

I was only questioning why the average person who leases/trades a car every few years bothers to do ANY maintenance.

I never buy used stuff. Ya' never know what your going to get. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

yea your right on lease vehicles, i bet some people do very little maints on them, that would be a good qustion to ask before buying a used vehicle, not saying that all people that leases dont take care of the maints that should be done.
but some people dont uderstand that changing the oil in an eng. its not just the breaking down of the oil, its also keeping the eng. clean. as far as oil brands, its that important, long as it mets the reqiurments of that eng. its how often it gets changed.

I can assure you all that if I were leasing a GM vehicle and the little oil change light said that I only needed to change the oil every 15k, that would be fine with me.

The condition of that nasty old oil at the end of 15k in a leased vehicle is of absolutely no consequence to me.

Bates:

You and everybody else whether they'd admit it or not. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bates,

First: Change the oil whenever and with whatever you wish. It is your money.

Second: You say GM does not care? What about resell value? What about changes in Oil and engines technology? All of my research shows that the 3mo/3000mi interval came out in the 60's. How many cars are produced today with carbed engines? When I sold parts retail in the late 80's performance parts then are not even the standard in some cases today. Have you looked at the oil change interval of some of the high revving imports? Times have changed, technology has changed, oil has changed, regulations have changed, accept it. Just because you don't understand or believe in something does not mean that it does not exist or works. I have said on this board before do as you want, just as I have said before do as you wish but don't pass opinions as facts. It does no good.

Did you also notice that I said under the RIGHT CONDITIONS. Did you notice I said 5-6000 miles ON AVERAGE? I have co-workers that have over 100,000 miles on their vehicles using Dino oil and GM OLM. Take some time to research the OIL LIFE MONITOR with people that post FACTS not opinions. No, I am not saying to look at GM websites but find the websites where REGULAR people are using the OLM, and had their oil tested. I did before I started to use it. 78000+ miles no problems and plans on reaching 200,000+.

As I already said, Change the oil whenever and with whatever you wish. It is your money.

I was responding to ( Strange?? Ive never seen that sort of service intervals EVER published in ANY GM owners handbook! If they TRULY believed that..they should walk the walk...not just talk the talk. ) with information pulled directly from a GM Owners Manual (Yes, cut and paste not retyped, It is available on the internet.)

I was just posting FACTS not opinions. If you are not a GM person, Hate them, Love FORD, Imports or whatever you like, I don't care. Just don't try to post your opinions as facts.

There is always 2 sides to a story and the truth is somewhere in the middle. I try to find the middle.

It may be FACT as you put it in SOME GM owners manual..but it sure as heck isnt "across the board"..so I have no idea which owners manual you pull it out of. Every time I get the urge to go car (vehicle) shopping..I always go thru the manuals to see whats the latest and greatest..and I sure as heck never read that data..but then again I cant look thru every owners manual GM puts out either.

It is in all CURRENT domestic Owners Manuals. This would exclude the Vibe and Aveo. GM started to make this a standard on 2004.

Edit:
I am not sure about SAAB. And I left the Base Soltice off of this list.

And I'll be a quarter to a hole in a donut that the FINE PRINT reads something similiar to what Honda specifys...

"I bought the wife a new car last yeat..NOT a GM car..and in its manual it had 2 different maintaince schedules. Normal and severe duty..?? The defination of severe duty ( to them) was ..."IF you live anywhere that the temps can go BELOW freezing...OR above 100 degrees F..then you need to use the severe schedule!!!!!!!!.."
