The ultimate (affordable) FOX Rifle

As a side note, if you can find any of the Hornady V-Max it shoots great in my coyote/fox guns. The 40 gr. shoots about a 1 1/4" higher than the 55 gr. version but they both shoot sub moa from either of my rifles. I happened to find a couple of cases of each with the moly bullets but the regular ones shot pretty much to the same point of impact. The coyotes and fox can't tell the difference!

In the winter I tend to use the 55 grain version in my Rock River, but I can see/shoot further then and they are less effected by the wind.

I just have to come up with the right color to Duracoat my Mossberg.

Deer heard, I'll certainly try some of the ammo recommended.

I ordered my scope and rings today, hoping everything will fit okay when I get them.

Ended up with the Vortex Viper 4-16x44mm.

Only thing left to do is pick up some ammonite and shoot the thing. :)

Thanks again to everyone for the help. This is the first firearm I've ever purchased brand new, all others were used from friends and family. Hoping my sons will be shooting this someday.

Conveniently, my second son is due right around the time I take delivery of the rifle, so as he gets older, I'll tell him it was his Birth Day present.

Can't go wrong with a vortex scope. Those puppies are nice and clear. Happy shooting and be safe.

The MVP I've heard is pretty darn accurate, just be careful with the finish, they are prone to surface rust if you don't wipe it with oil.

Best part is you can use either 556 or 223 and AR mags too.

.223/5.56 is 22 caliber.

22Long Rifle is a tiny cartridge; it is much quiter than .223/5.56, 22-250, 222 Remington etc. They are all 22 caliber though.

I like the classic catridges; my choive would be a varmint weight barrel bolt action from any of the major manufatureres, although I lean towards the Remington 700. My starting point would be Nikon or Leupold scope; I used to work with microspopes and photography a lot, and Nikon really knows how to make good glass.

I just learned that I can't shoot anything over 22 caliber after dark. Hmmm.

MI laws specify rimfire-only after dark for varmint hunting/pest control with caliber not specified beyond that IIRC (.17 RFs, & 5mm Rem RF presumably ok) Of course we can hunt 'yotes with a .223 all day long outside of deer season where RF-only hunting is specified during daylight hours, and no firearms of any sort after dark.

We're allowed to carry/use rimfires for dispatch when running our trap lines. Not something we do at all since proximity of or direction to nearby buildings or homes makes that a logical if not legal no-no. Besides, isn't that why god created the original club? :)
