The wider the wheels the less horsepower????????

When I bought my B7500 tractor the rear wheels were adjusted all the way out and I noticed that they could be adjusted in about 2" but my neighbor said that you will lose horsepower is this true?

Me, bein' from Georgia two, well I kin til ya' this is absoloot fakt. Its kinda like TV wrasslin'. The guy with the bigger shoulders wins, don't he? He's wider so he's got more horsepower, rite?

OK, sarcasm aside I don't know how you're going to tell your neighbor, Jethro, this diplomatically. The fact is it would take two of him to make one good idiot. In summation, track width has nothing to do with horsepower.

Only thing you could possibly lose is traction - but the HP of the engine is a constant. Now you "might" be able to change the gear ratios if you put smaller or larger tires on the tractor. Doing so "might" change the tractors ability to do what you wanted it to, but even here the HP of the engine would not change.

My neighbor gives me similiar advice. I've just learned to smile and nod. I also hide the tools when he's around to lesson the chance of him helping me with something or other.

The only thing you lose is stability. If you have hilly property and you traverse the slopes it will be easier to roll the tractor over.

Re: The wider the wheels the less horsepower????????

There's 3 well defined catagories of knowledge:

A: You know that you know

B: You know that you don't know

C: You don't know that you don't know

Methinks the neighbor is a classic catagory C.

I can think of no reason that is would be true. Perhaps your neighbor is pulling your leg.
