Not sure it really means anything, I have an old F150 ford with a ton axle in the rear, came that way from the factory. There are several different configurations of the same year of F150. Some models and manufacturers might use the definition Hazmat 's list defines, but not all and not all the time.

It is just a name for a particular model with certain similar characteristics. The closeness of the model number designations of one manufacturer to another is deliberately done to cause familiarity and confusion. Remember when a Bel Aire was Chevrolet's top of the line car? Then in the late 1950's, Chevrolet introduced the Impala as the top of the line and the bottom of the line up was the Biscayne with Bel Aire in the middle. Then in 1965, they introduced the Caprice and the Impala dropped one notch on the "luxury" scale, but was still touted as a "top line" Chevrolet. They also dropped the Biscayne and it was the Bel Aire that took its place. It used to be very simple when all the manufacturers used terms such as Master for the best and Standard for the bottom, and each model had a number designation which corresponded to the basic design of the car, such as 2 door or 4 door...

It is even worse now with the HD designation. You can have a 1500 HD that has specifications like a 2500 of before.

The dually one tons have GVWR of near 10,000 with my lowly half ton a gVWR of 6200.

Again, even the term half ton has no meaning since my half ton weighs 5800 lbs empty it only has 400 lbs of "technical" cargo capacity. Not even a quarter ton.

Time to open the door and look at the sticker for ratings to figure out what you have.

For grins, you should realize that a crew cab diesel 4x4 f250 can have less cargo capacity than a toyota mini truck. These buggers are heavy.

unless you count the 32 foot gooseneck behind it... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Exactly the point. The gooseneck type trailer will typically dump 20% of the trailer weight on the ball. 10,000 lb trailer puts 2000 lbs in the bed. 7000 lb empty truck weight with a 8800 lb GVWR puts you over the GVWR but way under the very high GCWR. It's a trick they play.

Ability to pull the trailer is secondary since you will be overweight on the truck long before you hit the GCWR.
