On the news tonight; Norwegian geologists have found great quantities if the element Thorium. Thorium can be used to fuel nuclear powerplants whitout the negative sideeffects of Uranium. No risk for a meltdown, and unsignificant quantities of radioactive wast. And the wast cant be used th make atomic bombs! To good to be true? No, but we are looking 5-20 years into the future before the tecniqe is ready for practical use. The energy potensial in Thorium is probably bigger than that of Uraniun and fossil energy put together.

Very interesting post, Gunnar. It amazes me that there are so many viable alternative energy sources out there and we are so fixated on oil. Hopefully we will begin a transition to alternatives before we use the last drop of oil or completely foul the atmosphere.

Looks to be some expensive stuff. That website states "Thorium metal (99.9%) costs about $150/oz." I wonder how much energy you can get out of one ounce compared to one ounce of uranium.
