My 18V works very well. Before you buy, I would see if you could get something locally. The 18V is heavy enough; a 24V or 36V might be pretty heavy. I am not sure on that, but it would be worth checking before you hoist one up in to trees all day /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif At least go in and handle one first...

Many of the pole saws have detachable heads... that is, the saw removes for hand pruning, then you stick the pole back on for high up or hard to reach stuff. Kind of like two tools in one.

It is only in Norwegian, but you get the idea.
Something totally different; last summer we had a plastic duck race in our local river. Buy a duck for 15 dollars, the winner gets 1200 dollars, the rest of the money goes to a youth club.
Afrer the bird flu, plastic ducks might be the only birds around!

I always carry a Ryobi 18v recip saw on the tractor with 12" x 6tpi blade. Works great but, did you find the ugly blade works a lot better?

Many thanks for the suggestions, in fact I did go out an buy a poor mans Pole Saw. It is long stick with the saw at the end. My husband and I tend to buy quality so until I can affors to get the Stihl model I am making do with a manual pole saw. I will say it makes all the difference in the world.

I will post a few photos in the line of trees I just finished in the following posts. In this photo I have moved down to the next lower terrace and thankfully there are only 11 trees in this row, again on a slope but not as bad a slope at the upper terrace.

In this photo you can see me holding my poor mans pole saw and behind me is a tree with my measure stick. I measured how far up the branch shakers we use for harvesting can reach, and I cut the trees just below the reach of the shaker using my measure stick. You can see that we are cutting off huge amounts off the tops of the trees. The worst are the ones on the slope, it is hard work so the previous farm worker seems to heve jsut let them grow. Arghhhhhhh

I do think a Recricating saw would be best. Next one of my family members who comes to the farm will be bringing us one. I checked out the DeWalts 24Volt Battery and they are 550 Euros + Tax (Not sure wht the tax is it varies could be 19% course we get that back when we file taxes) Much much cheaper on eBay.

In the meantime here is a second photo of me with my poor mans pole saw, all decked out in my equipment. I have on my back the Pelnec power prunners, the battery for that weighs a couple pounds, with the prunner on my right side in a leather pouch I crafed. On my left I carry a hand saw. I now keep Aleve in my pocites so in case I forget them in the morning I don't have to walk back tot he house /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Some work photos for you. This photo shows the last ree in a line of 27 that are on a steep slope. I drew and arrow showing the last ree in the line that had not yet been cut. I also drew and arrow to point out the slope.

Thanks for saying I'm a young woman, don't think I qualify but I know doing this type of physical work is going to keep me more fit than my last job in front of a computer day and night, that is for sure.

Many thanks for your tip on the Norwegian Chef, when I get a chance I will contact him for sure.

You asked if it was worth it, yeah it is worth it. We do make money on the farm. As much as i complain I would rather be doing this than anything else. Once we have done this massive prunning life will be easier jsut keeping it up.

Jsut so you don't think I'm doing all the work, here is a photo of my husband. He works harder than I do. I generally take the work that is more tedious because I am a kind of fussy, exacting type of person. But my husband does work physically ahrder than I do. I learned a good phrase years ago that works wonderfully on my husband and my son, I simple tell them that "This takes boy muscles, can you help me out with this" What can they say???
