Thermos Bottles in the cold..

I have a stainless steel Stanley that works pretty good. The "secret" in my case .... use it with all thermos, coffee butlers, and my steel thermos mug ... is to preheat the vessel. I have one of those instant hot faucets and always 1/4 fit the vessel (mug or thermos) and swish it around for a minute.
You just have to watch the first couple of swigs ... burn that ole tongue real quick.

Rich,

I HAVE poured in hot water to prep the Nissan but I don't do
this on a normal basis. I just pour the coffee from the pot
into the Nissan and add a bit of creamer. I add sugar with
the coffee grounds. Pouring the hot water into the thermos
to warm it up does help I just don't need to do it on a regular
basis.

I'm getting ready to pour my first cup this morning. One
of our lab techs bought me a red hot biscuit so I'll go buy
some Krispy Cremes donuts to share then I'll get my coffee.
It will have cooled down enough for me when I get back.

I still haven't found anything better than the stainless steel Stanley; however, we have one of them and one of the stainless steel Thermos brand and they both work quite well. The Stanley is normally used for coffee and the Thermos for ice water.

Bird, the only Stanley's that I can find are the Green Stanley/Aladdin's with the pour through stopper. Does yours have the pour through stopper or solid? Second is yours Stainless on the outside? Thanks in advance.

Yep, that's what we've got; only bought this one a little over a year ago at K-Mart. And I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but we thought the stopper was leaking (wife said it was) after a few months so I sent them an e-mail and they sent us both a new pour through stopper and a new solid stopper, then we discovered the original stopper was OK; operator error, so we're still using the original one. Since my wife and I are both coffee addicts, and it's over 20 miles to the grocery store, we don't leave home without it, so it does get used a lot.

I don't know whether the older Stanleys were any better or not, but I know my Dad carried the same one for over 30 years hunting and fishing; salt water made the outside look pretty bad, but it still worked fine. Dad said any bottle that would keep the coffee hot overnight in a tent when it was 20 below zero (in Alaska) was the only one he'd ever buy. My younger brother still carries the same one that he once threw out of an airplane (wrapped in a sleeping bag) to a downed pilot friend he located in Alaska many years ago.

Even their old ones are not stainless exterior; green just like ours but did not have pour through stoppers.

And of course you may find a better one; I just don't know about them if they exist.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I might just have a defective bottle. I will call Customer Support and see what they think. Since they have a lifetime warranty we will see what happens.

Thanks to all for the info/replys. I know it is not tractor specific but related, as it is in the tractors toolbox when I'm not at the house.

Wingnut... Well fancy that! I don't have to wait long for some smart guy to start marketing those, do I? Seen any significantly larger than 12 oz?

well, they could have been 16 oz, Patrick ... but I only examined them long enough to show them to the wife and she said we didn't "need" them ... and since she's the one who HAS to have her coffee in the vehicle (me, I just drive, and drive, and drive, and drive ... forget that I have coffee).
I would imagine that they might make larger ... but, heck, the combination of the heated mug and a good thermos ... well, how big do you need them? Don't want them so big that they're hard to handle one-handed ... gotta keep attention on the road after all.

Also, I did have, years and years ago, a small perk that had a cig. lighter cord attached for brewing while driving. Used it once or twice, but it didn't work for me. You see, when I get behind a wheel, I drive, and drive, and drive ... and stop when I'm at my destination. Niceties like food, drink, and other stuff just get in the way ...

pete ... who needs a vacation and a large coffee
