ThermoStart - photos of TS flame

By popular demand, (Well I think it is interesting ) I just took these photos.

Incidentally this was with the key in 'Start' position but with the clutch safety switch preventing cranking. I was testing to see if TS operates in Start position as well as when the key is cranked left.

Vapor seen before flame starts, and for a moment after letting go the key.



After holding the key in TS position for a few seconds the TS element, similar to a car's cigarette lighter, starts to glow. Then diesel vapor fills the intake. At about 10-12 seconds the vapor ignites.

The initial flame was higher, up to the top of the air filter. I kept the camera away until I let go of the key and the flame dropped down to this level.

And that is why the Perkins A/AD3.152 is LEGENDARY for it's cold starting ability - the Thermostart!!

ThermoStart is great,got pretty chilly here last week and w/o t.s. couldn't have got my little yanny going. Is there anything you can add to thin diesel out when it starts jellin.It wouldn't go through the screen and had to take it out to fill the tank up? russ

Some kind of diesel fuel conditioner. Do you have a parts store near by you? Kleen flo, Power service, Howes, lots of them out there.

This is interesting, after all the talk about which way the key is turned in order to activate the TS, I did the test as you show and had the same results, the Ignition on my YM will only turn to the start position, it will not turn to the left, could this ign. switch been replaced at some point? My old Kubota didn't use the key switch to start the tractor, it had a seperate lever that would turn back to heat the plug and the same lever turn to the right to start the engine over, It did have a key ign. switch that had to be in the on position in order for anything to work,

The Mf Dealer by my Grand parents house went out of buisness and is now a Bar called the Tractor Bar. Rumor has it that so many people had trouble with thier MF.Tractor and started drinking heavy they would be more profitable selling Liquor MT.Nebo WV. NO BS. and I am not kidding you one bit it is there!!

Maybe replaced. Or maybe this was an early tractor and there was a dash button to press for Thermostart? I dunno.

on my 1610d dash there is a pushbutton that says "check" never figgured out what it was for.had to tear into the dash once and found it to be disconnected. I've got the switch that goes to the left,maybe it's been upgraded and that check button at one time had something to do with TS. russ

On some models the thermostart was an option. The tractors that were ordered without the thermostart did not have the momentary TS position.

The "check" button is used to check the "idiot" lights. Push that button and all of the warning lights on the dash should light up.

On my 1610D, when the check button is pushed it only lights up the four "dummy" lights on the dash. To engage the TS, you turn the key to the left and my tractor is original as far as I can tell with no mods, so Im assuming this is the way it should be. Im not aware that the check button has anything to do with the TS. When the key is held to the left for about 10 seconds, I hear a pop and then it will start in cold weather. I held the check button for about 15 and heard nothing and the tractor wouldnt start so I assume it has nothing to do with the TS.

I'm sure this is so, although i don't think in the case with my tractor,
I have the TS as well as the small fill reservoir, I cannot tell if perhaps there might be something preventing the switch from going to the left? I don't really want to try forcing it that way because the key has been welded on, and I'd at least like to get another key to replace before trying to force it to the left If I were to happen to break it off in the switch,
There looks to be a rubber cap/plug on the dash that covers a hole, this could be where the option for some kind of button or switch would go, I dont think it has ever been off though,

Just kidding The round one that is plugged is were my head lights are wired to a switch. On yours the round blk. knob/switch to the right of the steering wheel is a toggle switch to my work light.

Tim had to go look. The GRN. wire that is connected should go to your ignition switch A with a jumperwire to the same terminal from B if you turn the key backwards or Left your Water Temp and ALT. light should come on. you are giving the TS. power. You also did me a favor Thanks. After seeing your picks all I need is the Res. and the hose and wire it back up for mine to work. I have never needed it so haven't had to hook it up. Here is the Wire diagram posted earlier.

how does one tell if the TS is working properly? I went and tried mine today and i couldnt get it. Key turns to the left but nothing happens.

Horn huh! well I found a loose wire and connect it to that large black button, Now My windshield wipers work again .
the headlight switch on my tractor is located just under the Gauge ,and the blinker is to the left just half off side of the picture, the horn is the small button just under the idiot lights, and a toggle for the rear work light is to the far left corner of the dash not shown in picture, I think having the blinkers is somewhat strange flashers I could see But blinkers! hmmmm
I guess them Japs got to warn others in the rice fields which way they're turning............ Oh yeah! just kidding bout the Wipers, its really nothing more than a silent alarm button......

and as I stated before I dont think the ign, switch on my tractor will turn to the left, I have tried when I first got this tractor to jump right on and start cranking right away and would not start up, it would have to turn over for 8-10 seconds resulting in a slite drain on the battery,
i ask someone about this and should I be somehow be glowing the plugs? and how to do so? he told me to turn the swicth on for 10 seconds before attempting to start it over, been doing this way ever since and it has always fired right up, I certainly hope I am explaining this correctly but this is as I was told ,

Does the flame picture in Hoye's description look familiar? (Compare to post #1 above). Long ago Hoye's page had a credit to me for the photo.


It's too hard to research stuff here on TBN. While this forum is excellent for responding to someone's questions, Hoye's explanations are a better place to accumulate the 'common knowledge' needed to keep these antiques in service over many years.
