Dargo,

Those "stop sticks" sound really good. I might have to think about that one. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The really silly part is that the chain is just bolted on with one lag bolt that will unscrew with a 9/16 inch socket. The gate will also unbolt and come apart real easy and quiet. And of course, a pair of bolt cutters could have done the job faster and quieter also.

There's no accounting for the thought process of an idiot.

Target practice might very well be the case. Who knows.

Deer season runs for another month, and I'm rural enough that gun shots are pretty common and nobody seems to pay any attention to them.

Dargo,

I've considered the stop sticks like police use with the sharp, hollow little tire piercing stems. Any idea where to get something ike that?

Home Depot... 1 - 8' 2X4 cut into two pcs. Drive 16d spikes through them. Grind off sharp points to prevent them from going thru the sole of someones shoe...

You can make caltrops pretty easily by taking three good-size nails, grinding the heads off so they're pointed on both ends, and spot welding them together so that no matter how it lands, two sharp ends are always pointing up. Not that I would recommend or condone the use of any device that could potentially hurt someone or their property...I've only, uh, seen it done, yeah that's the ticket...

That's what the locals used in Nigeria, a wooden plank with nails driven through it and a rope tied to one end. After dark they would drag it across the road. In the morning they'd come back and offer to fix your flats for a "small" fee. Just another reason never to drive at night in some of those places.

It would be quite a deterrent placed behind the gate where it wouldn't be easily seen, just as long as you remember where it is.
