Does anyone know where one can purchase the thick (approx. 4 ") styrofoam that is used on hot-tub covers ? Mine has gone bad & the local pool co. wants $ 500.00 + shipping for the cover  . All I need is the styrofoam to go inside my cover.I've looked at h.d & lowes all they have is 1/2 " thick.

When I replaced the cover on mine, I bought from an online company that makes covers. I think it was around $250 plus shipping. The cover itself was so degraded from the sun that it needed a complete replacement. The one I bought has lasted as long as the original, although now needs to be replaced again. The tub is a '93 Hot Springs. It's lasted well.

Do you have a car or boat upholstery shop near you. They can probably redo the whole thing for you or at least supply you with foam or let you know where to turn for it..

I neglected to mention, that the foam core of my cover is tapered from center hinge to edge. Water doesn't puddle up on it, although snow will accumulate. I also recall there being different strengths of foam, perhaps the sunken tubs need a stronger core to prevent a child or pet from falling through. Mine was standard strength and holds up well when the dogs jump up on it.

Ceck out some building supply stores. Most have it 2"' thick so you may have to double up. You will need the pink or blue because it is water proof.

I have seen the box store foam sheets used before, but unless they are covered with something they will gouge and dent pretty easy as the foam is pretty soft. Since you are going to put it inside your existing cover this shouldn't be a problem. It is typically only available in 2' or 4' wide sheets X 8'-10' long so you will have to be creative in assembly to cover your tub which is probably wider than 4'. I have never seen it thicker than 2" at the home supply stores. Since it will have to lay in 2 directions to cover the tub opening, it should be easy to get the 4" thickness you require. You should also be able to easilly beat that $500 price quote:) You can use epoxy to bond the sections together. Some spray adhesives may work also, but it is dependant on their composition and that of the foam. The wrong combination will disolve the foam. You can perform nice neat cuts with a sawsall, skillsaw or tablesaw.

I have seen the blue stuff in hd. & lowes but, all they have it in is 1 / 2 " thick. The blue stuff would b ideal because it is covered in plastic but, I can't locate it in 2'' thick sheets. I will ask if they ( HD or Lowes)can special order & mabe use liquid nails to glue it together to get my thickness. thanks for the replys

You may can find some at places like K mart or Wal Mart. They have had it for use as a mattress pad for beds, and I've seen it 4" thick.

I bought 4" Thick blue styrofoam at a builder/construction supply store. Not HD or lowes. You know a real contractors store. They were happy to sell me it.
