You may be resetting this more often than you like.

Yep, it definitely depends on your local situation/wildlife. Ideally you don't want things that will be activated by natural/normal visitors, such as an outside motion detector might be. You definitely want to avoid false alarms. But Deer and Dogs don't typically open gates and doors. Nor do they move boards left leaning against walls in front of windows to look thru them, nor do they press down on a porch step hard enough to set off a hidden switch, or set off properly placed motion detectors INSIDE the building.
Mechanical motions such as opening doors or gates or cabinets, or stepping up on steps, can be harnessed to pull wires, or activate switches to turn things on. As for noismakers, well propane cannons are pretty common(see below link). Squibs and such are not always as available, but there are other non-lethal substitutes such as the afforementioned tripwire game alert devices. Now one of those built into the roof eve with a blank round and wired to that board left carelessly leaning in front of the door to your cabin, might make quite an impression. Having whatever device that gets triggered also activate an auto dialing device to call your home and cellphone to let you know one of your devices has been activated is also a good idea.
For a truely remote situation that is not easilly checked on(no neighbors right down the road), There are of course possibly some seriouse repercussions to the sort of fright this sort of trap could induce. One type of person might take a serious look around and wonder what else is booby trapped and say "OK, this isn't fun anymore" and wonder how to get away with all their fingers and toes still attached. Kinda like the survivors in a group after the first land mine goes off. Another type of person might get really pissed off and decide they will have the last laugh, by burning down the cabin...
For a situation that has neigbors and is not too hard for you to get to, I would think this sort of thing would get people looking out windows and wondering what the heck is going on.
