I fondly remember going to Wendys for a couple of jr. bacon cheeseburgers frys and a frosty until the doctor put an end to that. He seems intent on sucking all the pleasure from life. If you think food and gas are expensive what about doctors?

Now I get my burger fix by driving past and breathing in that delicious smell. It is probably bad for me put who wants to live forever.

Chris

We must have the same doctor. On the other hand the last time I went to Wendy's (for a double cheeseburger and baked potato with sour cream :p) the grossly overweight employees were a great advertisement NOT to eat there.

they can't send our farms and ranch lands to China

That's true but a lot of them are already owned by foreigners

Chris

foreigners, or foreign conglomerates? In which case, it's no different than our factories going to China.

My favorite thing at Wendy's was when they had a salad bar. I used to eat there two or three times a week. I could not afford to buy all that variety for myself because I couldn't use it before it spoiled. The Wendy's close to my house had fresh stuff everyday and even chili sometimes. I think it was discontinued because so many people brought their kids in, ordered one salad bar, and fed the kids off their plates. I know I witnessed that several times. Management couldn't control it. If people were challenged, they got all indignant and loud. Finally, it was discontinued, and I had to pay the big bucks to eat the salad bar at Golden Corral.:(

Wendy's was just about last choice for me among the burger joints, except for the chili and salad bar. That much was good, but I haven't been in one in several years.

I like burgers, but most of the time for a sandwich I'd prefer a Schlotzky's or Arby's. And as many times as I've been each of those, I've never tried the different things on their menus. If I go to Schlotzky's I have the Original, a bag of chips, and iced tea. If I go to Arby's I have the plain roast beef with horsey sauce, curly fries, and iced tea.

Not only are all the prices going up at the grocery stores, but Walmart is still the cheapest overall. But it does annoy me that they apparently assume we're too dumb to understand their price "Rollback". One example of how they've done so many things is that bananas have been $0.39 a pound for some time. Walmart recently went up to $0.46 a pound, then just a few days later went up to $0.52 a pound, and in another few days, back down to $0.46 a pound with a sign "was $.52" to make it appear they gave us a price reduction when it was really a price increase. All that was done in less than 10 days.

To understand the true cost of selling schemes like this, you have to be married. And you have to be foolish enough to point out to your wife that having just bought something for "1/3 off" after it has been marked up 50% in the first place is not quite the good deal you felt it was.

The cost/benefit analysis definitely supports quietly enjoying the new "good deal".

Jim, that sign in the window of the local Whataburger is the first time I've seen such a sign at any Whataburger (haven't been to one in awhile, but always liked them) and my first thought was this particular Whataburger and I just knew that couldn't be, but didn't ask anyone. Obviously, the sign means the whole company, as that history link would indicate.

There is a Whataburger in Mooresville NC. It is closer to the downtown area across the RR tracks. You have to make a concerted effort to get there from the interstate I-77 / 150 cluster mega growth everything including NASCAR traffic mess build-up. Did not know about their history until reading this site. Very interesting. Great sandwiches. I think they built there in the 60's.

As of day before yesterday, they took down the "Rollback" sign and went back up to $0.52 a pound. Bananas are still cheap compared to a lot of other foods, but percentage wise, that's a pretty good price increase.

We have a hard time getting good fruit at Walmart. We usually will buy most of our fruit from another chain store such as Albertsons or Kroger, cost a little more but the quality seems fresher.

Me too! Except I always get the potato soup to go with the original Schlotzky's sandwich. Wish I could make soup that tastes like that.

Mark, if it were not for pinto beans and cornbread when I was a kid, I might have starved to death. I also had many bowls of hot rice cereal for breakfast. When you consider how dry beans, bags of rice, and bags of cornmeal/flour keep without refrigeration or special storage, it's no wonder that they are staples of food for feeding the world. Heck! I can even remember when people sifted their meal and flour to clean out all the weevils before using it to make bread.

So Baytown is really a blur to me, but I remember people used to laugh and say that Baytown was a town with only a refinery, fast food joints, and car lots.;) I have not been there since the late '70s.

Baytown has gone down hill in the last 20 years. I work at Exxon and have not lived there since the 80's. I remember Neal Dickens, bought a few cars from them.

Small world

Bird, the first Whataburger I ever ate at was in Baytown, TX in 1967. That little A-frame building looked like it had been there a long time even then. I do not remember them being this far north back in those days, certainly not a national chain. It seems that Whataburger is a homegrown Texas franchise. Here's a link to their history.
There is a Feltners WhataBurger since '67 in Russelville Ark. Has fed college kids and hired them every since. Travelers on interstate detour to get a meal.
Texas also has a Watsonburger. Never had one.

Yep, I've done that. Nowadays you'd just throw it all away, but when I was a kid, you couldn't be that extravagant.

Yes, I have seen documentaries about the 30's and the dust bowl days. Many a meal was "gravy" made from white flower or meal and lard. Not the greatest thing to eat, but better than going hungry. You could get away with it for a short time, but it was hard on everyone especially the kids. Poor nutrition stunted their growth physically and mentally, not being all they could be. Many were unsuitable to serve in WWII because of the poor food they had to eat.

Goes to show that you are what you eat. Have not gained weight this week, still 149-1/2 pounds.

My mom used to say that pinto beans were a meat substitute. If you had pinto beans and cornbread, that was a complete meal.
