</font><font color="blue" class="small">( I did my share of Cobol over the 300 baud modem to my university where it was compiled. Had to solder up all my connections at both ends of the serial cable as well as back in 1982, they were pretty rare. )</font>

Ah yes.... A 25-pin "D" connector. What did pin 1 and 7 have in common in a serial cable? What's a null modem cable?

Here's a photo of my acoustic coupled modem. I think it was 300 baud, but it may have been 110. Just like you, I'd call in to my school's mainframe to compile my Fortran programs. In those days if the code was wrong, the mainframe might respond with some terse message like, "ILLPUT." I think that stood for ILLegal inPUT, but it always made me groan and cuss. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Jim, I was terrible at Cobol but had to take it (twice). With all the alpha numeric characters, typing the 1000+ lines of code was an all day task. Given that the computer system very much resembled an elevator, there were times I would save a line of code each time. Rmemeber, this was just the start of onscreen programming so while punch cards were difficult, a line editor using a program called XEDIT was still a mssive chore. I used my home computer and used WordStar, a full page editor. I was spoiled beyond belief. With 6 outside lines, it was more difficlt all the time to get on so my auto dialer kicked in at about 12AM and dialed until it connected. Those were the days. Mark

We had a dusty old Heathkit receiver in the closet, a relic from Tam's grandfather. Full of tubes, but still worked well. Pulled in European stations. We had no use for it and nearly took it to the dump...but decided at the last minute to post it on Ebay.

The "useless old radio" went for over $800! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

In about six more weeks I'll have two pair of pants for sale. Slightly irregular, the right leg is cut off at the knee. I hope I never have to see them again, much less need them. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
