I never "loose" a tool. Sooner or later they all show up at the home of one of my kids. I keep telling them I'm going to do what my dad did, put a chalk board on the basement wall that they have to write on every time they "Borrow" a tool.

I know it won't do any good, I never listed any of his I borrowed.

He used to come to my house for a visit every now and then and cup his hand around his ear and ask it I heard that wimpering. When I'd ask what he was talking about he'd say "It's my ---- tool crying to come home."

Might try a $25 deposit...

This winter I got a metal detector. I thought in addition to getting rich digging up treasure it would be handy to find all the parts that have fallen off the tractor. I haven't found any tractor parts but I did wonder about the drunks who left pop tops everywhere. I did have a little spare time the other afternoon and dug up 99 cents in coins so I figure I have $214.01 to go to pay it off.

About painting the handles of tools florescent orange. I think it is a good idea. I have a ball peen hammer in my tool box that is painted that way. I don't know who's it is but that color helped me find it out in the field.

I removed the license plates from my Jeep CJ just minutes before giving it a coat of DuPont Centari Acrylic Enamel.

Never did find the plates again... they just vanished.

Suspect it was one of several of the neighborhood kids watching me paint that gave the plates legs?

I've had the opposite problem...

I don't know how many times I've left my (manual) post-hole diggers lying in the back of my truck while making trips to town...

and they're always there when I come back for them. I just can't seem to find a thief that is motivated to dig holes....

I paint a lot of my tools that are outside, hot pink. My buddies don't want to borrow them, and they show up well in grass.

Ha with the metal detector out I was searching for a knife i dropped. I kept getting hits of metal but could not find anything. I did learn that when using a metal detector dont wear steel toe boots.

I do at least one canoe trip each spring on different rivers in Missouri and Arkansas. One of my favorites, Jacks Fork near Eminence MO, has the double bit axe I earned as a youth working in a forestry program. I was very proud of that axe and miss it to this day.

The Jacks also has my GPS and a new Canon digital camera that I lost when the big boy in the front got nervous and tunked us as we were going thru a small rapid.

After that I bought the rig below, if I am going to tunk again it's all on me!

I hate losing stuff, too. Most of my tools that I use outside get painted with fluorescent orange paint. The tool handles, (rakes, bush axes, etc.), also have my name stenciled on them. It's not as easy to overlook the tools left laying in tall grass, anymore.

I like that.....Think I'll use Kubota orange!!!

I've lost a few tools. Some have been permanantly borrowed and one time I had a garage sale and lost a tool box full of roofing tools that didn't get put behind a partition good enough. Someone walked off with them and who knows what else.
Lost my first wedding ring while canoeing a local river with some of the boys one weekend. That didn't go over too well...

It kills me to lose something. Im heck with keys lost a loved set of keys off the tractor at work. It was my first collection of keys I got for each peice of equipment I picked up on. Long and short Deere, Hitachi, Komatsu 790 and 680 series keys, Old Forked Cat and the new style, Case , Ingersoll and several others.

I dont carry a knife any more as I always lose them. I like nice tools and learned the best way to keep them was to get the tools that come in a package or sets that way when I pack up a job Ill have them all together and if one is missing I can birddog it right away. Like the other day at work we keep the maintenance shop clean but after a long winter with several needed items built it was getting a little crowded. I alwas put my tools back in their places but a few were out and our new guy piles all the tools up in my othertool box My large tap and die set I had out finally found the 3 missing taps in a bolt bin. All my large sockets when others use them putthem in the wrong place and so forth.

The 75 year old man that works on our trucks his tool loan policy is when you borrow something you pay a deposit of 2 times the tools value. THat way it always comes back.

Lost many things over the years. I started to paint my tools a bright color. It helped when working construction jobs to ID them when someone else liked my stuff more than I did. Just works for me. My wife also said that I just like to paint things. Gee, maybe that came from painting rocks in the Army ?

I'm having a small house built on our property. So far the workers have left: 1 tool belt with tools, 4 metal cutters, 1 wheelbarrow, gas pressure gauge, rebar bender, an inflatable plug for testing plumbing vent stacks, hammer, screwdriver, pencils, cans of spray paint, electrical conduit, boxes of nails (8d and 16d), wire cutters, just to name a few. This could be where your tools have gone, my house.

a buddy of mine builds most all of my fishing rods, I happen to have a rod that I got for a girlfriend that I had for years and then I had a similar rod made with my wife's name on it

So one day I take a buddy fishing and don't you know he throws the rod with my wife's name on it into the water, now my wife has to fish with my girlfriends fishing rod, oh well, pretty funny anyway

I took a marker and labeled all the spots in my shop where tools get hung up (shovels, rakes, crow bar, hammers, broom, push broom, axe, chains, chain binders, etc) so when my wife or neighbor uses something, they know where it goes to put it back. Eliminates that "don't know where it went, so I'll just drop it by the door"....

Getting ready to use a label maker and do the same thing in my roll around tool box. Hope to keep from accumulating stuff on the work bench that way....

There's a system called "5S"...one major component of that system (part of what is called LEAN Manufacturing) is organization.
Using labels, silhouettes or shadows for tools is part of the organization.
