Geez, I'm not so sure anymore. I wonder if the switching back and forth somehow contributed to the failure. I use fwd for almost everything I do. A point could be made about reducing wear and tear on 4x4 components but there is very little just going from a to b. My road is 0.4 km (around 1340 ft)long. I don't know....for the winter I'll probably leave it in 4x4.

Rock pin turn..has a nice sound to it. I added another 10 ft the next day. It was sort of fun. Thank goodness for the orange wheelbarrow!

I would guess you had a defect that caused your failure. It happens with machinery. My 2 cents - forward and back shouldn't have a negative effect - running in 4wd unless you're on hard, dry ground or pavement, should not be a problem.

Good luck,
Loren

I have the bigger CK cousin (CK25). At 430 hours, all but about 4 hours have been in 4WD. I've worked the front end pretty hard, moving well over 1000 tons of heavy dirt and rock in the loader on steep slopes. No problems with the 4WD whatsoever.

I think you just had a bad part. With a good part, I think you'd really have to work hard to break it.

The mechanic said it was a bad casting, I think he meant bad steel. He said there had been others. Sounds right being a bad part. I'm sure I'll loosen up in a while. I just really missed, lot of shoveling and wheelbarrowing

Wade , you may have fooled the other guys here but I saw right through you. You wanted to get back out there before that mud dried up thus ruining your playing in 4 wheel drive playing in mud. lol zman

I am with you!
I am in 4WD always, as I work on grass or gravel.
The NH has never let me down or worn out since 1989!
Since I know the land so well, I do not consider hittting an inmovable object, and damage the machine. NH is just not that fragile!

FWIW I also keep my tractor in 4wd 95% of the time. I have a DK40SE, and my property is very hilly, so the 4WD really helps the handling going up and down steep hills. Obviously, if I am ever on the pavement, I put it in 2wd but otherwise it stays in 4.

Please don't start this here.....
Someone will start posting pics of the broken NH engine blocks and such.......
Then it will turn into a big bash session...
Everything man made has issues from time to time.

My new CK20S has less than 20hrs (all in soft dirt) and has also converted itself to full time 2WD. Now I need to to get it to dealer to get it fixed under warranty. I am not an especially happy camper as the tractor is at the lake lot where we only go on weekends and the tractor dealer is only open on Sat mornings when we are there. Don't want to have to waste a whole day getting up early on a Saturday morning, finding a trailer to haul the tractor, get it to the dealer, get home, return the trailer, and then reverse the process the next time I go out to "play" at my lot.

Bummer.
