Thinking about 6V to 12V conversion

One nice thing about converting the 6v generator to 12v is most of the wire harness stays the same as it was. I have a IH Super H that had a voltage regulator not a cut out so it was easy. Unless you hear how easy it starts :) or look in the battery box you would not know it has been converted to 12v.

When you folk change these from 6v to 12v, are you just changing that, or are you also converting the current wiring from positive ground to negitive ground?

considering most people are converting to 12v via an alternator.. ( usually a delco 10 or 12 SI model ).. then you are pretty much tied to negative ground.

Yes.. you can have a specialty alternator shop build you a 6v or 12v positive ground alternator.. or an isolated ground alternator.. but it's extra work and money.

If you simply use a generator to convert to 12v, then if the regulator is mechaincal.. you can usually retian positive ground.. or change to negative... that's one of the advantages of a dcgen.. you can swap polarities if it has a mechanical regulator.

My father had the starter overhauled, but finally installed an 8-volt battery and used them on the tractor for years before they became impossible to find.

Just in case someone doesn't know it, heavy duty 8 volt batteries are sold everywhere now because they are used in many golf carts.

Many of the 8v golf cart batteries I see ( walmart sells them here ) do not comply with group 1 specs..

Yep, that's why I'm going with the 12-volt generator and a voltage regulator. After these years with a 12-volt battery starting the tractor so well, there is no way I'll consider an 8-volt battery which was still marginal.
