Thinking about an AR-15

Ahh, now I see. ;) I don't think the problem is with Mr. Stoner as much as it is with the US Government procurement system. Mr. Stoner's design was ahead of it's time and a good starting point. The problem is that once the military gets a hold of something they are very reluctant to changing it even if the change would be for the better.

These Kalashnikov rifles being referenced are all MAK-90 models. Even a modified true select fire AK-47 (or the AK-74 in 5.45x39) requires a class 3 permit to my understanding. I have owned MAKs from China, Russia, Yugoslavia, and about 3 other eastern bloc countries....Bulgaria is one I recall. Frankly, the best built of any I have seen was the one from Yugoslavia. The Chinese milled models (and even the stamped ones) have never given me any problem.

I have fired military AKs from Russia and Yugoslavia, and the Yugoslavian was definitely easier to handle....I suspect it was a half pound heavier. Out to 200 yards it is accurate enough...after that it starts to be a guessing game. It's certainly not something to shoot at matches, but it's really hard to make one not fire. A couple friends and I used to burn an easy thousand rounds in a short afternoon with the AKs and an SAR-48.

I have owned exactly one AR-15, and I never fired it. I'm not a match shooter.....just never was particularly good with a rifle. In a tussle though, I'd take even the MAK in semi-auto over anything else I've used.....they seem about impossible to jam.

Nope, no "Class 3" license needed. That's only if you plan to deal in them as a gun dealer/seller. All you need to do is pay your $200 and get your tax stamp from the BATF, after your background check of course. If you have a clean record it's just a matter of waiting to get the tax stamp. I got my first full auto about 15 years ago and try to buy another one at least every other year. It's a expensive, very expensive hobby.

Interesting side note. There has never been a crime commited with a registered full automatic weapon.

And very few crimes committed by concealed weapons permit holders....
In fact there was quite stir a year or so back when info was released in NC that the crime rate among CWP holders there was LOWER that it was among the police:cool:
I have no desire for a fully auto weapon, heck I shoot too many $$ worth of ammo as it is:p But I am interested in a silencer permit to allow target practice without annoying the citizenry. Had the police show up at my mountain hideaway recently because of complaints about us shooting 2 AR15s for an hour or so, even though we were told there was no law against it.
Of course AR15s are LOUD and some of the crack is the bullet exceeding the sound barrier and one can't silence what has already left the barrel....

All the rifles designated MAK-90 were chinese, I believe. Not the prettiest of the AK's (Hungarian SA-85's are, IMHO), but those MAK-90's are definitely robust.

Roy, I think you're right. The Yugo was an M70 if I recall correctly and the ones from Egypt were just called Maadi AKs or Maadi MAKs. I got in on the ground floor, at one point splitting a case at a flea market. Got full dress Chicom SKS rifles for around $70 and stamped MAK-90s for a little over $100. The SKS rifle has to be the best woods carry rifle ever....if I drop it in a lake, I'm not out enough to worry about, and it will drop medium game pretty quickly (or so I'm told;)) out to around 200 yards.

I think I still have a box of a hundred stripper clips I never opened.

My real point was that most are not AKs, but MAKs, a non-military semi-auto version. The media is terrible about that...they wouldn't know an AK from a rhinoceros. Most in media have no clue what the military definition of "assualt rifle" really is.

You're right...most media types don't have a clue...nor do most legislators. I always correct them when they talk about "assault rifles" because we civilians own semi-automatic sporting rifles with pistol grips and detachable magazines...that's all we own...not selective fire or full automatic weapons.
BTW, did you know MAK stands for "Modified AK?"

Hmmmmmmm...reckon we're a bit off topic talking about AK style rifles, since the original poster is looking for an AR-15.

Very true Roy and I couldn't agree more. It just yanks my chain when a media type uses the wrong terminology when describing weapons.

There was a very good thread here on TBN a while back with a good link to YouTube and a police describing and showing the difference between weapon types.
