I'm considering the purchase of a tree shear, since the rental rates around here are ridiculous.

Like grapples, there's quite a price range. (Unfortunately, WildKat doesn't list a tree shear, but I have a call into them).

One that has caught my attention is from Neon Material Handling and costs $3,752.50. It will cut a 12" tree, weighs 760 pounds, and the shear head rotates 90 degrees so it can cut limbs.

They don't specify the hydraulic pump gpm needed, and my tractor only puts out 9.9; but they do say their shear is for a skid steer or compact tractor, and my tractor is on the larger end of compacts.

Anyone have any experience with this particular shear? Does anyone here use a shear with your compact tractor?

Comments, suggestions, and shared experiences appreciated.

I've looked at several off and on for several years and always end up putting it off. GPM doesn't affect anything except the speed of the jaws closing, so that may not be an issue.

A rental company owner said he stopped renting tree shears because inexperienced operators tend to tear up the tractor/skid loader they are attached to. The forces at the fulcrum (where the shear cuts the tree) can be tremendous, and falling trees are difficult to predict. Its easier to get them aligned with the tree on a skid loader, but you are closer to the action/danger.
