I just purchased a 5010 HST with cab one week ago. So far I have only used the tractor for snow removal but I must say I really like the cab. It has great visablilty and the heater works great. The cab does seem a little noisier than I thought it would be but not that bad. The HST is great for snow removal. So far I am happy with the tractor.

regarding clutches:

20 years ago, I overhauled the engine on my 1952 Ferguson. The engine was tired after 40 years of heavy use, needing everything done to it.

I did a complete front to back, top to bottom engine overhaul and when I got to the clutch, I could see no reason to replace the disk or pressure plate as they were absolutely perfect. I did replace the throwout bearing. As far as I could tell, they had never been replaced, as the previous owner had it for many many years and had not touched it. There was also no indication that the engine had ever been taken apart.

I used it for about 20 years, put thousands of hours on it, and gave it to my son last year. I have never adjusted the clutch in all that time. As far as I can tell, it might be 60 years old and still going fine.

Unless someone is really abusive to it, they last for a long, long time.

I think loader work is harder on clutches, and I suspect your old tractor did not have a loader or at least get much loader use. But I will agree, we have seen clutches last for decades on some of the old iron. Good operators, clutches sized properly and not much forward/back loader work.

As someone mentioned earlier, it is all about heat. A careful operator can make a clutch last for decades. There are some design issues also. When the first Branson's came out 15 years ago, they had a real soft clutch engagement, they were really smooth. The way the linkage was designed made it really easy to slip the clutch and we saw some rookies operators smoke clutches in a hurry. After a bit, they changed the clutch material and the linkage design and the clutch engagement became much more sudden. It was engaged or not, and clutch failures dropped dramatically. And with a little practice, the new clutch could be engaged just fine.

Mostly loader work during my 20 years of use.

:) :)

Everything you say about how to use the clutch is dead on, however.

That's impressive pilgrim. Pretty cool old tractor as well.

Clutch life will always be determined by the operator.... HST is nothing but a handicap or a deterrent to keep this from happening... only plus HST presents is tight quarters work and safety towards unfamiliar drivers

I think HST is better also with PTO implements for which you need max power but slow ground speed. Tiller and snow blower are examples. And it does make mowing in tight areas or with varying grass density a breeze as you can slow down or speed up ground speed without clutching or shifting.

This I will agree on their is a call for the slow pto operation for sure.. trenchers have been a big call for this as well.
