Thinking of changing my ISP? To Verizon?

If you have a smart phone with Verizon it should have hot spot capabilities. That's what I use. You'd be wasting money if so because it would basically be the same thing. You'd still be running off their 4G either way. You get free hot spot now anyway. I had looked at getting Home Fusion, but found it cheaper to just use my phone. I turn on hot spot and then have wifi access for anything I want. If I had any other choice though besides satellite, which I tried the new Exede and it sucks, I would. I don't have DSL or Cable where I live. Only thing I don't like about what I have is a data limit. I miss having Netflix and other online movie access.
I started to suggest using his phone as a hotspot but won't they cut the speed back after a couple of GB.

Before you make the jump check into how close you are to the nearest Verizon tower. I use cellreception.com . I live in a rural area where good cell service everywhere does not exist. Cell phone signals are good for only about 21 miles and at that distance cell phone signal boosters come into play if you are going to not be dropping calls. Obstructions - leaf canopies, mountains, bridges, tall buildings all come into play as to your cell signal strength. Some of the energy saving materials used in home construction could also affect your signal inside the home. Metal roofing, metal studs, radiant barriers on the underside of roof decking.

If you have or have a friend that has a verizon smart phone check your signal strength inside the home. A -70 to -80 db would be satisfactory. At about -98 db you just about don't have a reliable connection.

Good Luck.

The biggest issue with Verizon wireless internet is the way they charge you. If you go with the 5GB plan then go over 1mb they charge $10. So, its $10 per GB and nothing smaller. Many people find the Version wireless is more expensive than anything else. I use a jetpack daily and its fast on 4G LTE here, but it's expensive if there are other options. About $60 to $70 per month. Hughes Net was so slow and actually not much cheaper when your buying tokens all the time.

It all depends on how much bandwidth you use, I miss the DSL days when I could download movies and such. I don't do that using Verizon Wireless, too expensive. I moved out in the sticks so no DSL or Cable here. For a light user the $50.00 5GB plan with a JetPack is nice since you can carry it with you or move it around the house. With the rebates and such going on its much cheaper than the permanent home system and your not locked down to one location. They charge you for that 10GB, so I like the cheaper plans since the overage is $10 per GB either way. I would rather have a cable modem or DSL at the house though, usually thats a cheaper way to go per GB. My last DSL line was unlimited, I guess they still offer that. Hoping for an unlimited service out here in the boonies some day.

The only thing I can tell you about Verizon, is that after my local ISP installed the 'fiber optic' in my area, Verizon came in and rents the access off my ISP and ups the price to their subscribers.

I have fiber optic cable directly to my computer, phone and TV.

DON Are you sure they ran fiber to all three??? Typically it is to the side of the house. If so I would like to hear about it. I have two fiber connections to my home one is for my kids and one for me. The kids have a full GIG with phone lines I only get 400 MB. We run Cat6 to desktops and multiple wireless routers so each laptop gets it own channel, works well HD videoconferencing and remote operation are great.

No they don't cut your speed. If you go over your data limit you are charged $15 for another GB not $10 as SageBrush mentioned. I just learned this when I went over. What you can do is if you see you are fixing to go over your limit you can change your plan to the next higher data plan which IS only $10 more and you actually get 2 gb more data for $10. After you reach your new billing cycle you can change your plan back.

I'll say again, if you have a hot spot capable phone then use it before going and signing up for a two year contract for a mifi or jet pack or home fusion. They all run off the same 4G as your phone will and they charge like $20 a month plus the data charge. You can actually get more data for the money by increasing your data cap on your phone then you can for the money it cost for the mifi, jet pack, or home fusion. Just go on their website and compare and you'll see.

I do not think my phone (old) is Hot Spot but I will check and see if it is or not. Had another storm come thru yesterday it knocked out the computer and phone again which they just fixed this past Monday?? The computer did come back up later but the phone router is still blinking for the phone connection and no dial tone. I'm thinking just drop the phone line with IPS and go with my cell phone which seems to always work.
