thinning potatoes

I plant my potatoes about a foot apart and cover them up. when plants appear - I hill them with hoe by covering plant leaves till it covered halfway. Lots of work, but worth it. I would then add mulch like grass clippings or stray hay if I can get it free. This helps with the size of potatoes.

your question about the flowers on the plants that is the blume after the blume dies then the vines will start dieing also thats when you can dig in a small area to see how your potatoes growed the size of the vine is no indicatition that you have big tators sometimes you will have beatuful vines and marbal potatoes and the other way as well the hilling thing for us is we leave ours in the ground as long as possible and we keep them hilled so the sun does not burn the tators on top i have never heard of anyone relocating tators after they started growing just remember next time plant them abut 6 to8 inches apart alot of people plant even further apart like 1 ft

in looking at these pics for another post, I realized the plants were already growing pretty close and leafing out. Is there a minimum distance I should maintain? And do they transplant well to another sparser location if handled carefully? Thanks My understanding is that plants too close to each other limits the size of the potatoes, too much competition for space. Drew
