Third World tractors

No kidding. I don't think that thing even has fenders. India is different - many people don't seem to value even their own lives. On one day trip from Delhi down to the Taj Mahal we saw a dead motorcyclist, an overturned bus, heavy freeway traffic on the wrong side of the center divider with no warning to oncoming high speed traffic (the detour around the motorcyclist who stalled when he tried to cross the freeway), and far to many close calls. You could take pictures like that photo all day.

Calrec - is that guy gathering firewood? Why doesn't he have a larger cargo area if that is what he is doing? And - is that a 'standard' model tractor or something he cobbled together? Does he use it for pulling a disc, or what? I can see it is a portable maize mill but I'm not clear about the tractor aspect.
Gathering firewood is a woman's job in that culture. Her husband isn't in the picture. It looks like those drilled plates below the drivers seat night be for attaching implements. Notice the lever to the left of tbe driver's seat. For raising the implements?

I'll ask my coworker if he knows more about the machine. Also will query my missionary sister in Kenya to see if she's seen these up there.

Do you know what is going on in the right side of this picture? I thought it was a maize mill until I went back and looked at it again. Maybe threshing wheat? The location is obviously Africa but I'm not sure that is even a tractor in the photo.

I copied the double photo off Yanmar-Japan's website, where they spoke of varied applications in different countries. I needed a rice paddy photo. (To illustrate why we sometimes find mud in the front axle and transmission of gray-market Yanmars shipped over here). They are both intended as marketing, promotional, photos but that's all I know about them.

India likes the IH/Mahindra so much there's a picture of one on the 100 Rupee note.

I've posted several photos I took of of tractors in India on here. I think this ones a Massey or Eicher.

And - middle class kids school bus arrives back in the hood. India has a rapidly growing middle class.

View from our hotel window.
(Incidentally, look how much the smog has increased from morning to afternoon. Murky light, no shadows, sun not discernable after 4pm).

Here is a school bus. In fact there are five people on the bike. She has a baby on her lap. Riding like this is illegal but widely tolerated in India. Honda had a great success with a bike design that allowed whole family riding on single bike.

I think the State of Jaipur has a mandatory helmet law. But only for the operator.

Ok, back on topic. Third World tractors. We saw a lot of them used for heavy hauling on the highway. This is the que at an 'expressway' tollbooth.

Those pictures are genuine illustrations that you do the best you can with the equipment at hand. I regard most of those depictions as being pretty darn innovative. Surely beats the use of animals such as oxen and donkeys, although I suspect they are still widely used in the more impoverished areas.:tractor: India is currently listed among the top three fastest emerging Countries. I don't remember the name of the region in India that has been an industrial base in India for several decades, but there are several models of John Deere tractors made in their plant there. That whole region is a vast industrial base. Perhaps in the near future, India's populace will not have to rely on the outdated agricultural equipment that some are currently using and making do with.:):tractor:
