A "chuck and duck" (drum style) chipper AKA chipper of death. They're pretty dangerous even as chippers go.

The chipper in the first video is hoping to star in the Fargo sequel. That thing is downright nasty.

Yikes! That is one scary machine. I am surprised anybody buys one like that. The workers seem to be at risk all the time. As an employer, I would not want staff using that thing.

(Although I admit to knowing very little about chippers, maybe they are all nasty in their own way)

I've owned two of them, they take no prisoners! I've chipped stuff with heavy vines in it and that was my worst fear with it. It could easily drag someone into the chipper. The worst part is- it dosen't care!!
The first one I owned I got when I repaired it and the guy never came back to get it. The first time I repaired it for him I rebuilt the engine. When he came to pick it up he wanted to "test it". He brought it up to running RPM (takes about two minutes) , grabbed a 6" by 6' pine log out of his PU and chucked it into the chipper! About 15-20 seconds it was gone! And I had chips 50' across my yard!
When you shut the engine off it takes about 3-5 minutes to stop in gear and about 10 minutes or more out of gear. They use a flywheel to do their damage.

Stuff like that is just SCARY!! Imagine snagging a bootlace or something on a log that's headed in there??

I didn't see any of the current safety bars on that one in the video. Supposedly if you were to get sucked in, the perimeter of the chute has a safety bar that you can hit or grab that will kill the motor....... but with the speed that thing fed material, probably would stop about 20 seconds AFTER you were reduced to chips. That is one nasty machine, and one I wouldn't want to operate ever.

I own one, and you do have to be VERY careful in how you use it. Mine is about 100 HP +/-, and has a drum about 15 inches wide and 12 inches in diameter. It will chew up logs nicely. Not well suited to small brush...

Experience has shown that if something goes wrong, killing the motor with the drum engaged will shut it down in just a couple seconds. That said, I don't want to test that theory in an emergency situation. I found out "the hard way" with mine when it threw a knife. Made a heck of a mess of the safety shrowding...

That thing is crazy, wonder what the injury rate is with that brand, Looks like it will suck you in, in the blink of an eye. If you are looking to get a commercial chipper look into the brush bandit, or some thing that has some safety features like reverse.

The only "Good" thing about the one in the first video seems to be that it is a bit higher off the ground than the one my son sometimes works with.
He is convinced that his workmate, who pushes stuff in with his boot, will get sucked in one day.
That and his "leaves first" habit.
Steel toe boots won't help you with these things.
I think if I was using a shovel it would have to be a straight handle one, I would want it to go quickly - can't always trust that grab and hold reflex (-:

Here's how to deal with a LOT of brush. Not sure if it's the same model, but they used a Vermeer with a 360HP Cat to grind mine up...

Watch how smooth the operator is -- he is GOOD!

YouTube - Loading the grinder

Here's when they ground mine -- that log is over 30" at the butt end:
