Re: Coydogs

As if pure strain coyotes weren't bad enough, "coy-dogs" have begun to appear as well. A "coy-dog" is a result of coyotes breeding with domesticated dogs that have begun to run wild. This is what happens when misguided folks, mostly urban dwellers, drop off unwanted dogs out in the rural areas assuming some farmer will adopt them. The dogs turn to running wild and often will fall in with coyote packs. Usually the coyotes will kill and eat these dogs but a few do survive and bred creating coy-dogs. The resultant packs of coyotes and coy-dogs have developed a lesser fear of man than the pure strains. Until recently, damage caused by coyotes went fairly unnoticed because it occurred at night and out in the back 40. More and more we are hearing of incidents in the barnyard and the backyard and more and more they are happening during daylight hours. Litters of puppies and kittens are disappearing faster than you can say "Wiley Coyote".

Bird are there wild pigs in Texas?

Farther south in Texas there are the native wild pigs, or javelina, but all over this area the feral hogs are considered a real problem. Farmers sure complain a lot about them, and a lot of folks hunt them with dogs, set traps, etc. I found it can get to be pretty rough riding on a tractor just cutting hay where they've rooted up the ground. And year before last, the Corps of Engineers hired some outfit out of Ft. Worth to fly low and shoot feral hogs with a shotgun from a helicopter for two days. If I remember right, they killed about 120, which the farmers say wouldn't even make a dent in the population. They held a public meeting in advance to let the farmers around the area sign waivers if they wanted to let the guy in the helicopter shoot hogs on their property, too (and most did).

And of course, since they aren't considered to be a game animal, there's no season or limit; anyone can kill or capture them if they want to. Of course, all this Corps of Engineeers property around the lake is designated as a hunting area, but only for shotguns and archery; no pistols, rifles, or slugs in shotguns.

Bird, thanks for the info. I've read stories about bowhunting for javelina. Haven't seen or heard much about wild hogs. There was an local article about a population of wild hogs living along the banks of the Conneticut river. Supposed to have escaped from the estate of a rich landowner years ago. The boars were said to be dangerous.

DFB,
The land owner in which you meantion is Ruger, yep the same man owns Ruger Firearms.

There are a lot of wild boar that have escape over the years, and do a lot of land damage.

NH has no season or limits and some of the boar which has been harvest around Newport,Claremont,Eastmen,Lebanon,Cannan,Lyme,etc...have weight up to 200lbs plus.
Only seen a couple in the wild, and those little boogers are fast on yjere feet.

DFB, I have not personally heard of anyone being hurt by the feral hogs EXCEPT when capturing them alive with ropes after running them down with dogs. The hogs are very secretive and not even seen very often; they'll hear you coming and disappear in a hurry. However, I know quite a few people who are afraid to walk through these woods because of the hogs, some farmers who carry rifles on their tractors to shoot hogs and coyotes, and one guy who told me if he hadn't had his rifle in the field one day, one of the hogs would have gotten his daughter. I've been here 6 years, have seen an unbelievable amount of ground rooted up, I've seen a few hogs that had been killed by hunters, some that were trapped alive, etc., but I've yet to actually see one loose on the ground in my neighborhood. I did see a herd of about 30 from the boat one day while fishing at Fairfield State Park, but not here at our lake.

TomG,

I'll try to answer your questions. This subject is really quite complex and worthy of it's own discussion board. Abundant information is available on the web. Do a quick search on UL1449.
I don't know is if zenor diode type protectors have additional circuitry to reshape the output power to a sine wave form. In PA work, sustained high or low voltage problems are managed by equipment that includes an auto-transformer which doesn't alter the AC wave form.

Sustained overvoltage will soon exceed the power rating of shunt suppression devices be they Zener or MOV's. This is typically handeled by overcurrent protection (fuse/breaker).

As far as reshaping the clipped sinewave no, this is the arena that is satisfied by UPS systems. UPS systems have matured to the point, they provide surge protection, limited time battery back-up, softare interface for power fail warnings. Some offer insurance for properly connected systems from $25,000 to $50,000 dollars.

"Tripp lite" offers several from 450VA to 1400VA.

The auto transformer is no more than a non-isolated voltage ratio convertor, typically will adjust the output from 70% to 140% of the input. These are used when the voltage is continually above or below the desired value.

With respect to Kitty Litter used on ice. Don't forget to save some for the cat./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Coydogs

What you are seeing are pure coyote. Because of the way coyotes reproductive systems are set up the chance of coy-dogs is very slim, and it could only happen one generation. It would have to be a female dog and male coyote. The other way, the coyote would eat the dog. Coyotes are like deer and can only reproduce at a certain time of the year. This is so that the young are born during favorable conditions. The gestraition time for a dog is different than that of a coyote, and any mix would come into heat too early and the pups would be born too early in the spring and would not survive the cold. A few years ago a coyote was shot near here that weighted in at 85 lbs. The DEC thought that it might be part wolf so they did DNA test to confirm that it was pure coyote. The eastern coyote is larger and more of a pack animal than its western cousin. I have been hunting them around here for years and also do some guide hunts for others.

Re: Coydogs

Von, Great description of a coyote.
The name coydogs are used more of abbreviation/nickname in these parts, and lot of people confuse coyotes with young Geman Shepards.
Example: A person killed what he tought was a mother coyote also her 3 pups, and come to find out it was a German Shepard with her pup walking thru a field.
How does that go...Know what your going to shoot before you point the firearm.

I know none of this stuff has to do with tractors. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif A search turned this web page www.texasboars.com. Did you know that coyotes feed on feral piglets.

DFB, I didn't know about that web site even though that guy's pretty close to us. And while I've not actually seen it myself, I had no doubt coyotes would eat the little piglets if they could catch them far enough away from the sow, and one neighbor (who's a full time farmer out in the fields on his tractor or pickup every day) has told me about seeing coyotes catch piglets.
